To the Fall

Rate this book
You know the story.
Boy meets girl, they fall in love, two kids, white picket fence.
This isn’t that story.

This is more like...
Man meets woman.  Man sleeps with woman.
Man meets another woman, sleeps with her.
And so on.  You get the idea.

I own a small boutique hotel in New Orleans, the Kingston.  I’ve seen men do some stupid stuff in the name of the woman they love, or at least the woman they love for the night.

That’s not me.  I’m always in control.  You’d be surprised how much you can get away with on just good manners and a smile. It’s the only way to keep my secrets safely locked away.

And my smile hides a lot.  Until her.

She turns me down flat.  Playing hard to get is my favorite game.  It’s the thrill of the chase.

Only problem is, I think it’s me that’s getting caught.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2! To The Fall (stand-alone). Pierce Kingston's long & hard fall into whipped!

“I manage to make small talk while we order, even though my dick is practically yelling for this woman to ride him hard.”

To The Fall (stand-alone) opens up to the life of N’Orleans hotelier and investor Pierce Kingston after he is mandated by court to attend (sex) counseling. It follows him through his attempts and failures of abstaining from sex and complete his program. Meeting heiress and hotelier Sutton Presley puts a wrench in his treatment schedule requiring sacrifice, negotiation, self-growth and a good dose of blue balls.

Told mostly from Pierce’s POV it is a candid look into the mind of a bonafide manwhore. Pierce Kingston owned the story; he is funny, blunt, obtuse yet reflective providing for hilarious situation, lots of dirty-talking, sexual situations and scheming. But as story unfolds there is an undercurrent of mystery, secrets and tragedy. Heart-breaking! Funny! Sexy! Unpredictable!

“Surprisingly, I don’t combust upon entering the church or when taking my communion. But I’m about to combust from the boner in my pants.”

To rate or not to rate.🤔
To hell with it.. I'll rate it for my troubles.

I wanted a drink so bad and I don't even drink!

*******Warning.. Spoilers Ahead********

Do not read if you don't want the book spoiled...

Don't blame it on me if you read past this warning..

Last warning...

This hero was a disgusting manwhore by the end of chapter 1 I was 100% convinced that he was a sex addict.

He had a open relationship on his side for two years with a woman and when I mean on his side he slept with anything and anyone but she only slept with him. She thought he would made her his wife or something but he only wanted sex with her and with anything that moves.
He then gets stops by the police (a woman officer) and to get out of a ticket he has sex with her.
He then meets a poor innocent woman who would become his victim heroine.
He already likes her and wants to have her naked in his bed before that he's going to therapy because he got busted by the police for prostitution and hes being court ordered to attend therapy, the therapist asked him to go without sex for 30 days he didn't make 4 days without sex and had sex with his ex of course this was after he met the heroine.

I didn't like his friendship with Annie.. Yes I know men and women can be friends but this chick hold his hands like they are an item. She starts dressing sexy to go to work oh did I forget to mention she's his assistant? Yep she starts dressing with strapless little dresses oh yes to go to work in a office she started dressing like she was going to a club.

I could see it from a mile a away that this woman was in love with him but he was too blind by pussy that he couldn't see it. They go check out a place because he wanted to buy it the details escape me because at this point I wasn't into this book so they went as a “fake couple” but then things started to get heated between them, he gets an erection while holding her and she gets hot and bothered well you know what I mean. Needless to say I was ready to be done with this train wreck. The victim heroine she see this and gets jealous.

And you know those 30 days of abstinence from sex that the therapist asked him to? Only 12 days he didn't have sex after the 4 that he had done before, he wakes up in a hotel after having sex 2 days straight with not 1 but 2 women, this was after he sent some flowers to the victim heroine.
Yep and that was my cue to stop. I should have stopped after chapter 1.

KITTY KATS CRAZY ABOUT BOOKS

THE FALL: Is a full length standalone romance novel by new to me author Prescott Lane. Told in Pierce’s POV

In this we meet thirty year old Pierce Kingston owner of a small lucrative boutique hotel in New Orleans, called the Kingston. He’s been ordained by the courts to attend therapy against his will I might add, a discretion that’s coming back to bite him in the butt.

If we were talking about his sexual endeavours he speaks very highly of himself, his fuck resume reads as follows:

Experience: Long and extensive
Objective: Making woman come hard and often
Skills: Dirty talk, oral and manual stimulation
Qualifications: Vast knowledge of the g-spot, and a huge cock I know how to use
Goals: Never been married. Don’t want to be. Never been in love. Not gonna happen.

Pierce is an arrogant man whore who avoids emotional attachments at all costs with the woman he beds, but outside of them he is very close to his childhood friend Annie who has been by his side through the ups and downs of his childhood. She's seen him at his best and at his worst.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

During one of his therapy sessions he's been challenged to partake in a sex diet, no partaking in any sexual activities for thirty days. Each day like a diary entrance we get front row seats as he explains in his own words how much he is struggling to stick to this diet. It's hilarious, you root for him to succeed.

I should write a song. Instead of the 'Twelve days of Christmas,' it could be 'The twelve days of celibacy.
On the twelfth day of celibacy, my diet gave to me: One set of blue balls, two chafed hands, three holes I can't touch.....

Then we meet twenty five year old Sutton Presley she just recently inherited a hotel from her Grandfather a stones throw away from Pierce’s establishment. She is also a commitment phoebe and doesn’t tend to date a man longer than a month, she’s also the very first woman that has turned down Pierce.

Sutton has baggage of her own she's been hurt deeply in the past so the last thing she wants is to be another notch on Pierce's bedpost, to win her over he's got some serious work to do.

I didn't know the kind of man I wanted to be until I found the woman I wanted to be better for.

This book is so unique in it's entirety, I can not compare it to anything I have read before which is why this was an easy 5 star rating for me.
Being that it's in a male's POV just added to the whole uniqueness of it. Like me you'll probably end up having a love, hate, hate to love you relationship going on with Pierce, he's a man whore through and through, doesn't hide the fact, in fact in the beginning of the book he's arrogant and obnoxious but like peeling the layers on an onion as you delve further into the book his past plays a big part on the man he is today and you can't help but love who is is by the end of his journey. A refreshing, highly emotional, addictive read.

Damn, I need a little time to process all of this...

Anyway, this story started in one way only to unravel into something completely overwhelming and to end in semi satisfactory way...

We start with the singular POV of a playboy womanizer a boutique hotel owner Pierce Kingston who tells us his story of how he ended up in a court ordered therapy session as a part of a penance for being involved in an "alleged prostitution case" charges....

And NO, it's not what it looks like...

As Pierce explains to his therapist the background of this horrible misunderstanding, the sidelines of his current sexual actions aka random one-night stands, and well "open relationships" based on mutual sexual satisfaction, Pierce in fact, makes sure that each of his partners is in fact taken care of financially, he just never gives them, himself emotionally,
My perfect length of stay? Long enough to enjoy the sights, but short enough that they don't overstay my welcome.

his therapist Dr. Lorraine slowly and patiently leads Pierce to face his past, that is tightly linked with his one and only female friend Annie, his little stepsister Tawny while simoultaneously he tries to cope with emotional and physical turmoil caused by Sutton Presley , the only woman who declines his ministrations, charm and sexual attraction...and even though she stands for everything Pierce is running away from...
It abundantly clear that Sutton is a white picket fence woman. She wants love, a family, a house, the whole shit pot. This is a big ass red flag. I should be bolting, but for some reason, I'm still sitting here.

he can't stay away from her...

And he puts in the work...he's adamant to show her the pleasures he can give her, the high sky fireworks of sexual tension and obvious chemistry put in action, if only his therapist didn't gave him a task to fulfill - a prescribed sex-diet, no touching, no kissing, no coupling, until the step by step of getting to know another person takes place...that would eventually lead one step further into the unknown - the actual relationship

BUT in fact, when the deeply hidden and burried horrible secret Pierce built his "womanizer facade" on, but that was leaving him empy of deeper emotions, yet filled with crippling guilt making him unable to move on with acceptance, it will take a strong woman who would stand beside him to undertake the heavy load Pierce's been carrying for 15 long years...
That's what love is. Your hopes and dreams become mine, and mine yours. Your fears and fights become my battles.

giving him the reason to face with it, the strength to cope with it and further on, the support and love to heal...
It's only when we're at our worst that we can trust someone's love for us. Only when we've seen someone at their worst that they truly know how much we love them.

So, it's true that I LOVE the surprise factor in the books I pick.
Since I accepted this book as an ARC and based merely on the blurb, the surprise factor was indeed a fuckin surprise LOL, go figure that...

As the story unravels farther, I grew from giggling and being relaxed, towards emotionally involved and mentaly - totally pissed, enraged, to be exact.

The revelations of the events in the past that lead towards main character's development as the person we see him in present are simply infuriatingly and painfully hard to grasp. And I won't go into details cause it's a huge spoiler and that would ruin the whole experience for you, If I would tell you while ranting...and than the full impact of the stroy would lose its power of delivering emotionally gripping effect.

So, all I'm going to say, and that is being the reason for giving it 4.5 stars but not going over the edge into a 5 stars, cause of two segments:

1) the beginning was a distraction for me in perceiving Pierce as something more than just a playboy womanizer, he had a slick humor and charm BUT otherwise he really did feel cold and distant and I didn't take him seriously until somewhere around 60% which is kind of a bit too late for me to develop more than just "liking" for the hero.

2) the CLOSURE.
The hero found his peace, and he moved on, so I guess you can say he found his closure, sort of.

I didn't.
There was none for me.

And concerning the subject (which I am not revealing LOL) I felt like the bad shit won in a way, even though the hero found his peace and all BUT I didn't, I couldn't, knowing the bad shit just happened and no one payed for it, other than the victims. And that was just a bit too close to the real life scenario to just accept it and move on, cause dammit, I did sign up for fictional read, after all.

*sigh*

BUT I say it again, these are only MY immpresions and feels and opinons on the matter.

You can either take them into a count OR not.

Better yet, don't, read the book, and make your own opinions, and feels and immpresions, cause this is a good story with insightful life altering truths and thoughts.

From the PROLOGUE:

Want to know who I really am? My real thoughts? How shit really went down? Then turn the page. But if you can’t handle the truth, I suggest you stop reading now. What follows isn’t all pretty.

Life’s funny. You think you’re doing exactly what you’re supposed to, then boom—something knocks you right on your ass.
...
We all have a story to tell. I’m here, she’s in that hospital bed, and this is the story I’ve got.

***********************************************

I had originally decided not to read this book but a friend of mine gave me her kindle and insisted that I tried it. So, I did. And here's what I think...

This book is NOT about the taming of a rich and spoiled man-whore as it may sound. It deals with a much more serious subject matter and it would really be an amazing book if it didn’t fall short in its execution.

WRITING:

The majority of the story is told by Pierce, the hero. Only towards the end, we have a chapter with the heroine’s point of view.

Together with the hero Pierce, there are three main characters in the book, who are his best friend Annie and the heroine, Sutton.

At the end of the book, I understood Pierce and where he was coming from but not Annie. The writer does a good job portraying Pierce and his inner world but fails to do the same for Annie. And also, the character of Sutton is not convincing, either. At least, she didn't make much sense to me.

And that’s where the book fails for me: Portraying two female leads. Maybe, it is all because we never have Annie’s point of view and we have Sutton’s only once…

***********************************************

To love or hate Pierce?

When you first meet Pierce, you think he’s a serial womanizer and a man-whore who has commitment issues. He sounds arrogant while talking about his relationships with women in general. However, Pierce is not the douche-bag that says something and then does something else. He doesn't deceive the women he is with. He is, in fact, truthful to every woman who enters into his life. He says he is not interested in marriage & kids. He says he doesn’t do love and romance. He says he doesn’t do commitment. It is up to them to accept him or not. Some women accept him the way he is and some try to change him. When they try to change him, he gets rid of them. And Annie supplies those women with a severance package they accept and appreciate.

Now that I have finished the book, I can say that I only loved the hero among the main characters of the book. If you are patient enough to go through the first half of the book, the rest of it reveals that the hero is just a victim of his mother, father, step-mother and his best friend. Some caused his downfall without being aware of it and some contributed to it on purpose. The result is a man who cannot find his balance in his adult life. He tries to forget what he has lost and he does it by indulging in physical pleasure.

His mother was "the side-piece" of a rock star (that's how he describes). He would come and sleep with his mother every now and then, and he would then go back to his wife. His mother would throw Pierce outside where he played with his best friend Annie when his father came to be with his mum.

One day, his wife learnt all about his mistress and then, his father never came again. However, other men did. And they hurt his mother even more – and physically. He had to endure a life in which his mother was beaten by these men. Then, one day, enough was enough and he tried to beat his mother’s cruel boyfriend with the help of his friend Annie and saved his mum from him. (Their ages: 14)

Not an ideal childhood, right?

However, the worst was to come! And it comes when he starts to live with his father and step-mother in their house after his mother’s death. The conniving b*tch ruins his life even further.

The dilemma called Annie

Pierce and Annie were always really close to one another. As they grew up, they also developed other kinds of feelings toward one another.

One thing I never understood was why Annie was wild at a very young age. It was never fully explained why she smoke at the age of 12 or why she used drugs and alcohol at the age of 14. I never got to understand Annie. She didn’t have good relations with her family but what were her problems? Still a mystery to me…

Annie is the wild one, so she is the one who first kisses Pierce. She is the one who tries to seduce Pierce while he is still shy. She is the one who does something thoughtless, without knowing it will lead to a damn tragedy. However, when she learns her contribution to Pierce’s downfall, she can never forgive herself.

I can understand why she felt guilty but I never understood the way she lived her life.

Whatever she did, it was always too much.

After that tragedy, devoting her whole being to Pierce and his happiness, sacrificing herself and her life in the meantime was again too much, just absurd.

Annie and her whole story was much too exaggerated and what happened to her at the end of the book was infuriating and annoying. It shouldn’t have been like that. I can’t tell much more without giving spoilers but the way she lived her life was even sicker and unhealthier than how Pierce lived his life.

I can see that with one mistake, their childhood dreams and their future relationship was tainted and taken from them but still, I didn’t like how she acted upon it. That doesn’t mean I liked how Pierce acted upon it but he was the victim so I blame Annie more.

***********************************************

Sutton was not convincing!

As for the heroine Sutton, she is presented as a woman who has a baggage and that’s why, she doesn’t date guys for more than one month. Later, we learn what kind of a tragedy made her like that and it was just not enough for me. It didn’t necessitate that she gave up on all men because one was a cheater.

And then again, we learn that she was with only one man for one night – the fiancé - in all her life. So what about those guys that lasted nearly a month? What did she do with them? Didn’t they pass her test to continue dating more than a month or what? I just don’t know. She was practically a virgin except for that one time with the as*hole fiancé.

***********************************************

The relationship between Pierce & Sutton

When Sutton (the woman who has trust issues with men) meets Pierce (the man who does no commitment), there is this “strong attraction” that is mentioned but I didn’t feel it and here’s another point where the book fails for me. Their so-called strong chemistry just didn't get through to me until the end of the book.

There are some awesome sentences told by Pierce to Sutton or by Sutton to Pierce that I highlighted but somehow they felt artificial. Because the book failed to make me feel their connection, I couldn't appreciate all those beautiful lines. And I blame the writing for it. And not being in the mind of Sutton. I just couldn’t get her.

For example, she came as too pushy. She said she wanted love, marriage and kids. Yes, you can want all those things but you don’t need to repeat them to the man you are attracted to so many times before you begin a relationship. You cannot ask for a promise so early. No one will give you that guarantee or if they do, it will be a lie.

A guy may feel that he is not interested in all those things for the time being but sometimes one person or one relationship can change what he needs.

But, come on – not on Day 1 or 2!!!! ??? No way!

You should just start your relationship and wait to see where it goes.

Or if a guy looks too risky and if you don’t want to take any risks, then, you should stay away from him even on Day 1.

Sutton just annoyed the hell out of me by her pushy ways. And when she later turns into this understanding and strong woman that Pierce can depend upon, I never believed in her. It just didn’t make sense to me.

***********************************************

The therapy sessions are so much fun!

The book begins with Pierce’s sessions with a therapist that the court makes him to see. Pierce seems to be involved in a prostitution charge but it is not what it looks like, it is kind of a misunderstanding.

Still, he needs therapy for more serious reasons than this and the therapist feels this need of his even though he doesn’t say it literally.

When he tells the therapist how he lives his life, she sees that he has underlying issues that makes him treat the women and sex the way he does. She asks him to stay away from any sexual activity for a month. She wants him to get involved in a relationship emotionally rather than sexually.

The therapist wants him to appreciate women by dating and trying to get to know them without sex getting in the way. And the timing is just right and Pierce meets Sutton, the woman who refuses to be in his bed immediately like the ones in his past did. Sutton needs a serious relationship and a man she can trust. So their story begins.

Pierce is hilarious. It is a lot of fun to read his point of view. He talks about everything in a way that cracks you up 😊 That’s why, the therapy sessions are more fun than you can imagine and being in Pierce’s mind, where he is the most honest, is really entertaining and captivating. I really rooted for him to succeed. I wanted him to solve his issues and make peace with his past.

However, you can’t change a man in one day so Pierce tries but fails to do his “sex diet” not once but twice. Still, he knows succeeding in these therapy sessions is a must for him and the people he cared about and he tries harder.

***********************************************

SAFETY:

I cannot tell you if it is safe or not, it just depends on how you look at it. I can just tell you the facts.

When Pierce failed his sex diet twice, he was already interested in Sutton, the heroine. They hadn’t started dating officially but he was trying to persuade her to be with him by sending her flowers etc. It is up to you to decide if it is safe or not but this is the case.

***

If it is any worth, Pierce never fails again, never a third time. When he is officially together with the heroine, there is no cheating at all. He is absolutely loyal to her.

***********************************************

“I love you” I say. She looks down at me, stunned. I’m in complete control this time when I say it. No accidental declaration, no panic after. I’ve always been a direct man; it’s time to be true to that.
“Thought you didn’t want to discuss it?” she asks.
“Changed my mind,” I say, smirking at her. “I plan on talking about it all the time. Telling you multiple times a day, writing you poems and sonnets. Hell, I might even tattoo your name across my ass.”
She cracks up laughing. “Please don’t.”
I hug her, and she melts into my body. Right when she starts to let go, I hug her a little tighter and whisper. “I love you. I didn’t know what it meant before, but now I do.”
“What does it mean?”
“It means there is no one else for me. I can stop looking. It means gazing in your eyes for hours, when it feels like minutes. It means you will never give up on me, and I’ll never give up on you. It means I’ll give up all the nights on the town for dinner in the bathtub with you. It means when we fight, I know you won’t leave. It means the part of me that’s missing is found. It means forever. I’m done.”

***********************************************

What kind of a book is this? Romance or not?

Well, it is not a typical romance, for sure. There is little romance in it.

It makes you laugh, it makes you hot but it also makes you sad and frustrated.

The book starts as a light and fun story of an arrogant womanizer but it slowly gets deeper and deeper and becomes a heart wrenching story that tugs at your heart.

However, I think the writer was trying to do too many things at the same time and she couldn’t manage to deal with all of them as effectively as necessary and that’s why it feels lacking.

For example, she would have done better with 3 points of view, as I said before. With only Pierce's voice, she couldn’t reveal everything as she should and one chapter from Sutton's voice was far from enough. And no chapters by Annie was a colossal mistake if you ask me. Making Annie such an important part of the story and never giving her a voice didn't work. Or maybe, if Pierce had told us about the missing points and the lacking parts related to Annie's life, it would still have been OK but he didn't. Pierce's chapters were focused on himself. That’s why, I felt Pierce’s tragedy deep in my heart and always rooted for him whereas I watched Annie’s tragedy as an outsider. And for me, Sutton was the weakest link in the chain. She was this flat character who never came to life in my mind.

***********************************************

The suspense was good...

The book also has a suspense going all through the chapters and I liked that it made me guess all the time and my predictions were not all true in the end.

My final thoughts:

All in all, it was an OK read for me. But I reiterate, this plot would have been an amazing read if it had been executed in a better way. That's why, it is kind of a 3,5 stars for me but not 4 or more.

The ending is not satisfying!

At the end of the book, there are still two victims, and one evil character who never pays for their sins! Therefore, you can’t feel very happy in the end.

I mean I couldn’t. I am still frustrated.

***********************************************

Here are some quotes from the book that may give you a better insight into their story...

Pierce: “I’m not hard to figure out. I eat, sleep, work, and fuck. That’s me.”
The therapist: “I don’t think that’s you at all.”
Pierce: “You don’t?”
The therapist: “No, I think you are much more complex than that. I think it’s comfortable for you to act like that’s all there is to you.”

***

And Sutton—God, what have I done? I know we aren’t a couple. Hell, we aren’t even dating, but I also know she was counting on me not to be another douchebag asshole. And I just failed, epically.
- Pierce

***

Annie: “I need to talk about it. That night.”
Pierce: “We agreed not to ever talk about it again. You promised me”
Annie: “The silence. It’s killing me”.
Pierce: “It’s the only thing keeping me alive.”

***

She reaches out her hand to me, and I slip my hand into hers. She leads me up the stairs into my bedroom and sits me down on the bed, dimming the lights. It’s funny to watch her. She finds some music on her phone, like she’s setting the mood. Does she not know that men don’t need all that crap? We pretty much live in the mood, but it’s sweet. I’m waiting for her to start sprinkling rose petals on the bed.
- Pierce

***

Everyone believes we think with our heads, but what our heart believes is more powerful than what our head knows.
- Pierce

***

I feel sick to my stomach. Am I falling in love with her? Is that what this is? Because if so, it feels horrible. Like some sort of stomach flu or virus that makes you delirious. Is this why people call it love sick? Because you actually feel physically sick? Why would people do this over and over again? I know right now I only want to do this once.
- Pierce

***

The therapist: “It’s only when we’re at our worst that we can trust someone’s love for us. Only when we’ve seen someone at their worst that they truly know how much we love them.”

***

Love him no matter what. I know that’s what Annie meant. I said I wanted all of him. I said I wanted someone to love me as much as I loved him. I guess it’s time to prove it. It’s easy to love his smile, his charm, the way he looks at me. Now it’s time to love the other parts of him. Love the bruises, love the scars, love the darkness he tries to hide.
- Sutton

***

Pierce: “This isn’t your fight.”
Sutton: “Yes, it is. That’s what love is. Your hopes and dreams become mine, and mine yours. Your fears and fights become my battles.”

Major kudos to Prescott Lane for writing one of the most emotional and unique romances I’ve read this year! I was absolutely mesmerized and enthralled by this story from cover to cover! It’s absolutely unforgettable! If emotional, original, and heart-wrenching are your jam, YOU MUST read this book. My eyes are misting up while writing this review. It’s so good!

I’ll forego the long-winded breakdown and story summary and just say that Pierce is everything you think he is and so much more. He’s a real piece of work. Successful, self-assured, the ruler of his domain. He’s a business who’s in control of every aspect of his life. His character really put me through the ringer. One minute I wanted to gut-check him, the other I was completely in love. He’s such a man. lol And hearing the story from his point of view, makes it even more special! He’s a wonderfully complex and enigmatic character who captured a piece of my heart.

The secondary characters are fantastically rendered. Their stories and relationships are so significant to the main plot. And that brings me to the true MVP of the book. The plot and execution were BEYOND! It left me speechless, wrung out, and a tad bit sleepy since I read the story during the wee hours of the morning. It is UNPUTDOWNABLE!!

Grab it today!! Recommended!

Before I started this book, I saw the buzz surrounding it and judging by the author's previous stories, I knew it was going to be good. What I didn’t know was that this was going to be a unique, heartwrenching and complex story told through the eyes of the male hero and let me tell you, it was BRILLIANT!!!!!

“My perfect length of stay? Long enough to enjoy the sights, but short enough that they don’t overstay my welcome".

Pierce Kingston is a manwhore. There is no need to sugar coat the fact that he loves being with women because that’s not going to change anything. But he’s an honest manwhore if you could believe that and he let’s you know right from the start that being committed to one person, is not for him. You want a good lay? He’s your man. weekly dinner dates and snuggling? He would set himself on fire first because that’s NOT happening. But when he's introduced to the new hotel owner who refuses to be another notch on his post, Pierce knows that this woman is going to be ultimate game changer.

Sutton Presley has a one track mind and that’s making her family's hotel business, a success. Everything else, is secondary and that’s including her love life. Having one night stands and random flings is not her style so when she's introduced to Mr.Womanizer himself, Sutton makes it clear that she will not be buying whatever he’s selling. But like a bad rash, he keeps coming back and with a man like Pierce Kingston, he’s really hard to turn down.

I loved the evolution of Pierce and seeing him in his own element. At first, I really didn’t know how I was going to feel about him because let’s be real: he was a manwhore! But once I got in his head and saw how he was as a person, I fell for him hard! He was honest to a fault and his loyalty knew no bounds and I admired that about him. His connection with Sutton was unexpected but it real and for the first time in his life, Pierce wanted to stay and be in the moment for a long time.

If you’re looking a hot sexy, emotional romance, then this one is for you.

To the Fall was not what I was expecting from Prescott Lane, it was definitely more. A bittersweet, heartbreaking, unique ride that left me speechless.

Honestly, I wasn’t able to get into the story right off the bat—the heroine was not the one I wanted, so it was really hard to build an emotional connection with her when I was focused on someone else. But then, everything made sense. I'm not gonna say I was happy because I wasn't. Gawd, I'm still not happy, but I understood that for this story to happen, it had to be this way. Even if my heart hurt like a motherfucker.

So what started out as a light story turned intense to the point where I couldn't stop flipping the pages. The deeper I got into it, the more compelling it all became and I just wanted to know "the secret"—no matter how bad it was. Of course, I had some theories about what happened but I never imagined "the how"... that turn, twist, whatever you want to call it... was brutal. And the consequences... let's say my heart was left in pieces.

OMG I'm still in denial.

Anyway, yeah! Prescott Lane broke my heart and tried her best to put the pieces back together. So if you're looking for a book that will make you feel, then this is your book. And even if you're not looking for that, read this book.

Cleverly written and devastatingly beautiful. A complex story of love, friendship, and healing.

5 Stars, because this book and Prescott Lane deserve it, plus any book that gets to me that emotionally MUST get 5 stars.

To The Fall is a standalone romance novel told from main character, Pierce Kingston's, point-of-view. It's the story of Pierce and his denial of all things love, marriage, and future...at least until now. He's the hotshot owner of small, popular boutique hotel, but he's best known by all for his personal life. He loves women, but not in the way they want. He's committed to giving a good romp and providing financial support, but nothing more. When Sutton, a new hotel owner, denies him he invests himself into the chase for her, something he can control while everything in his life is out of control. Soon she's wound her way around his heart, proving that just maybe he does believe in love, as long as he can keeps his secrets and haunting ghosts away.

"Sometimes greatness happens from falling."

I don't even know how to review To the Fall, it's impossible for me to do so in a way that Prescott Lane deserves without me rambling or revealing too much. It's the sort of book you just have to read to understand, the nature of Pierce and his issues with love revealed in great detail and the true heart of the novel is in the past, not in the present. It's both romantic and heavy, a combination that you might not expect to work, but does very well in this case. I connected with Pierce in a way that I have never connected to a male character or male narrator before. His past had so many, maybe too many, similarities to my own past and his present issues were eerily similar to some of my own struggles that I had to work through. His issues with love caused so many to worry about him and caused a lot of hurt to those who fell in his path.

"'I need you too, Sutton.' My eyes flash open wide, unsure why I said that. I don't need her. I don't need any woman."

I really appreciated that Prescott Lane took a multifaceted approach to this novel, revealing us Pierce's hidden self in his therapy sessions while his natural, controlling ways took over in his daily life. We were given glimpses of who the man really was, especially as his past started creeping back in on him. Sutton, on the other hand, is a gem and one of the best female characters I've read in a while. She was honest, unabashed, and very believable. I felt like she was real, her love of Pierce could be felt as I read the words on the pages. She really became the answer to Pierce's questions, their emotional connection the thing that kicked off the unraveling of his secrets and the reveal of his ghosts. His past isn't pretty, it was really painful to read, but was marked by his strength and courage to overcome. His best friend, Annie, had a huge part in the novel, revealing to readers that she carried much of the burden of his past on her shoulders and that her life revolved around assisting him in his success. I loved Annie, I really ached for her and for Pierce as the past was revealed and the heavy weight of those long held secrets began to weigh them both down. Though I hated what ultimately happened, what finally lead to Pierce's success and discovery of love was authentic and realistic to what happens so often in real life.

"I see the moment I break her."

To The Fall is a complex novel with characters that develop through out the entire book. The revelations take this novel into uncharted territory when it comes to romance and Prescott Lane mastered it perfectly. It was an incredibly emotional read for me, one that I think I needed, and will be a powerful read for all who take the leap and fall into To the Fall. Prescott Lane has always delivered with her novels, but To the Fall finds its place among my favorites, alongside Mud Vein by Tarryn Fisher and Ghostwriter by Alessandra Torre. Thank you for this novel, Prescott, it was beautiful and heart wrenchingly perfect.

TO THE FALL Prescott Lane is the story of Sutton Presley and Pierce Kingston.
Pierce isn't a shamed of sleeping around nor is he ashamed when women think they will mean more to him. Pierce is always up front with women that he doesn't go further than a one night stand and the relationship that he has been in with Daphne, he feels that she knows the score.
But when he gets crossed in cross-hairs of a police bust he calls in favors to help get him out of it but what he does end up getting is a court order therapy sessions. The therapist put down her foot that he can't have sex for 30 days. Pierce isn't feeling to confident that he can make that goal.
Pierce does have soft feelings for Annie his assistant and his step sister Tawny but other than that no one breaks his bearer or rules.
When he goes to take and watch Tawny have a signing gig he meets Sutton who is working there. Pierce is immediately attracted to her but knows that she would want more from him then his usually one night deals.
Pierce ends up helping Sutton with a hotel but his hopes to take her to bed start to turn into wanting more.
Really enjoyed reading their story. Always love a bad guy going good!

This is pure CRAP that doesn't deserve a single rating! To Ms Prescott Lane and the publishers (as well as everyone who rated it 4 & 5 stars), shame on you! This is the worst crap writing I have had the misfortune to come across! You MS Lane do not deserve to call yourself a writer! You stink!

This is a romance???? Someone actually liked this story & douche-bag Hero who screws one woman after another - even after he meets & hooks up with heroine? I don't think so!!!!

Pierce was the one that everywoman wanted even though he was a known manwhore and he had no remorse. For a while there I didn't think I was going to click with him but I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Sutton was given an awesome opportunity to take over the family hotel and Pierce has offered to help her but deep down he wants to help her fall into his bed...but the joke was on him because Sutton is different from the woman he's used to.

The chemistry between them burned slowly and it had me on the edge of combusting!! There was so much to this story and I loved Sutton's way of helping Pierce see that he was worth everything.

In the end not only did I fall in love with Pierce but I rooted for him to find that closure and that happiness that he truly deserved. What an emotionally beautiful story of loving, forgiving and seeing that YOU ARE WORTH IT!!! Kara~5 Stars

It takes a brave author to start a book like this one. Getting to know Pierce is not an easy read. The author managed to incorporate every emotion possible in this story. The secondary characters were what really made this story work. By the end of this I was totally in love with Pierce and Sutton was such a perfect match for him. Best friend Annie needs recognition for her part as well. Loved it.

This is my fourth book by this author and I can say, without doubt, Prescott Lane is an exceptional writer.

To the fall is one of those story's that is cleverly written and saying too much about it would give spoilers.

Pierce is a manwhore, a guy who owns his own hotel and pretty much has sex daily, until he is put on a sex diet by his therapist, to abscond for one month from any sexual activity. Pierce tried and failed a few times and ended back at day one, there are moments with his therapist that made me laugh.

There are three main characters in this story Pierce, his childhood best friend Annie and then Sutton a woman who he meets while on his sex diet, the diet he was put on to appreciate women more, date them, get to know them without sex.

I thought I knew where this plot was going a few times but I was so wrong.

The first part is in Pierces pov only and it goes back to his and Annie's childhood throughout, the story is in three parts and each part crucial to the end message.

To the fall isn't what I expected at all and I actually got goosebumps at the end when I realized thinking back on the whole book what it had all lead up to like a secret message was finally being shouted out on Pierce behalf and the brilliant way To the fall had been written...

I definitely don't want to add spoilers, this is a book I highly recommend, I have been captivated by every one of Prescott's story's each one so different and creative and this was no different.

There's a perfect balance of hotness, humor, sadness, revealed truths and confessions that will tug on your heart in, To the fall.

A standalone novel that is told in first person single pov then dual pov in part two and leads to a hea.

Wow! Wow, wow, wow! That's what I said when I read the last page. What a great read! To the Fall is told, for the most part, in the hero's POV. The book takes place in New Orleans which almost becomes a character in and of itself. I'll confess that it took me quite awhile to warm up to our hero, Pierce. An unapologetic, cynical manwhore of epic proportions. He is a wealthy hotel owner who is brutally honest in his relationships ( or lack thereof) with women. His inner dialogue made chuckle more than once.
Pierce's relationship with his best friend, Annie, and sister, Tawny reveal his softer side but make no mistake... his heart is on lockdown. Until he meets our heroine, Sutton. Who turns him down flat. She is a white picket fence kind of woman and not ashamed of it. Pierce starts to fall for her.

"I feel sick to my stomach. Am I falling in love with her? Because if so, it feels horrible. Like some sort of stomach flu that makes you delirious."

Their journey is not an easy one. There are so very many layers to Pierce. So many secrets. We also see flashbacks throughout the book, memories that reveal the vulnerability of the boy and the events that have shaped the man. I loved the pacing of the story, the gradual revelations. As a reader, I doubted the author could make me fall for Pierce....but I did.
I'm not going to reveal the plot line here because it should be experienced first-hand. Secrets are revealed, of course. There were several twists and turns I did not see coming. The characters HEA was hard won and beautiful because
of it.

"Here's the thing about loving someone. It's a complete loss of control, like falling. Sometimes it hurts. And sometimes you land exactly where you're supposed to."

I finished To the Fall a few days ago but I just could not come up with the words to write my review. The story truly touched on a much deeper level than any book I have ever read. When I finished reading it, all I could think of was To the Fall. To the Fall impressed me. The storyline. The writing. The characters. This book really light up my soul. A truly special book with an effortless and moving plot that pulled me in. To the Fall was my first book by Prescott Lane and what an introduction to such an compelling and heart crashing story which held me from beginning to the end. Igniting. Capturing. Striking. To the Fall was an enigma of a book with a deep and yet pleasing moment of fiction that draws you in. It was definitely one of my favourite reads of March.

To the Fall is a standalone that follows the life of Pierce Kingston, a small hotel owner. Written in his POV, you see the trials, tribulations, highs and lows of a man with a broken past. He starts of as a douche, arrogant and you just want to give him a slap on the face. I love assholes in books and Pierce is one arrogant asshole you want to beat the crap out of him and love him at the same time. He is a manwhore and a very unlikable character. Prescott gave me a mesmerizing look into a man who abhors love, marriage and kids. To the Fall delves deeper to a man who struggles with a past he has not dealt with. You will swoon for Pierce. Your heart will break for him. He is hard man to crack but he has a tender heart to his friends and family close to you that makes you smile. At first, I did not like Pierce but he won me over. One cannot help but root for him.

To the Fall is a bittersweet, emotional, soul breaking and heart wrenching story that absolutely tugs at your heart. It struck me with a unique and fresh story that gripped me from first page to the last. Poignant. Light Hearted. Sexy. Hot. To the Fall gives you emotion, laughter and warmth to make you feel good. It is a delectable read that brings in some angst but still manages to give off some sparks. Prescott Lane wrote a book that clearly highlights love, overcoming hurt and pain and truly letting it all go.

I will definitely will be reading more books from Prescott Lane. There is something so heartful and endearing about her writing that truly brings a smile to my face. To the Fall won't appeal to a lot of readers but it is a book you should definitely give a try because you will be genuinely surprised.

To the Fall by Prescott Lane
4 stars!!!

“I need you to be brave…Brave enough to love me.”

Prescott Lane writes a poignant read that you will not truly understand until you finish the book. While many may give up in the beginning, because, to be honest, Pierce is a total sex addict, manwhore type, unless you can see past the cry for help, you won’t appreciate the story that Prescott Lane carves. I had my little inklings as to how this story was going to go, and while I was wrong, it was kind of on the right lines and while I didn’t truly feel one aspect of this read fitted with what came before it, this was Prescott Lane’s story to tell.

“Hate the sin, but love the sinner.”

I will say, the one thing I didn’t like was that the villain in this story was let off the hook. I felt that Prescott Lane had an amazing platform to bring to the fore a subject that is not explored or given any book space and this could have been so much more, in my honest opinion. However, I understand why she probably didn’t and the story that was presented was absolutely perfect on so many other levels.

When I posted about this release, I stated that Pierce would capture many hearts and while some readers who are reading the beginning are probably thinking I am completely nuts you need to give Pierce the benefit of the doubt. When Pierce is first introduced and as his proclivities are shared with the reader I knew that this was his cry for help. Some may see him as a completely asinine commitment-phobe, but between the lines, I knew he was scared and he was hiding something. My brain ran the gamut a mile a minute and Prescott Lane makes us wait to truly understand the real Pierce Kingston, and when you do, your heart breaks, it decimates, it detonates and all you will want to do is give him the biggest hug and say that everything will be OK.

“What you love, you’ll do the work for.”

I adored Sutton from the very beginning and although her and Pierce were chalk and cheese he needed someone like her to bring him to his knees. It is Sutton though that makes him want to be a better man, Sutton gives Pierce a reason to truly understand himself and see that how he was before they met was his way of protecting himself and not something that was ingrained into him and could never be removed.

“I’ve got options. You aren’t the only man in the world. You should always remember that.”

The reader is witness to Pierce’s internal struggles as with the help of a therapist he finally starts to battle his demons. The way Pierce’s struggles were detailed was honest and real and I am glad that the author didn’t go with the auto fix. Pierce failed, time and time again, until he didn’t. But this made him more real, more human, honest and gave me the one thing that I crave, character connection.

“That’s what love is. Your hopes and dreams become mine, and mine yours. Your fears and fights become my battles.”

The ending of this book is something I never saw coming, although the author does a great job of leading you down the wrong path, which was incredibly clever, while also being incredibly mean, it was none the less jaw-dropping. As I said above, while I wish this ended a little differently, the author dealt with this topic sensitively while also protecting those that would have been harmed in the aftermath. For me, this could have easily been a five-star read if somethings had happened a little differently. A shout out needs to go to Pierce’s best friend, Annie. The relationship that these two had was breath taking while also being heart breaking. For two people that started their friendship as little impressionable kids, they had been through so much together and their loyalty to one and other knew no bounds. Friendships like that are once in a lifetime and that was certainly true with these two. Great book.

To the Fall
By: Prescott Lane
5 Sex Diet Stars!!

What a BOOK!!! Started this yesterday and could not stop reading it. Finished it last night. I’ve always enjoyed Prescott Lane’s writing. But this one hit a home-run with me! Knocked it out of the ballpark! Very few books have had me start and finish in one day. To the Fall sucks you in from the beginning and you can’t stop reading till the story is finished. So many layers to uncover that you can't possibly stop reading this one until they are all uncovered!

Pierce is 100% a man whore. He is very truthful to every female he has an encounter with. No Love, No Marriage, No Kids. If any of those things start to play out, you get the Pierce severance package and sent on your way. Besides a good romp in the sack, he owns/runs a hotel in New Orleans along with his best friend since the age of 5, Annie.

Annie and Pierce have been through everything in life together. From their first kiss, to making art, to just being there for each other. Especially that one night. The one-night Pierce refuses to talk about. Their friendship is one that will last a lifetime yet full of secrets.

Sutton is the owner of the neighboring hotel. Head strong, has her mind set on doing things her way. Raised by her Marine father, almost military like, she doesn’t cave on Pierce and his sexy ways to bed a woman.

I absolutely loved Dr. Lorraine! She could see right through Pierce and his ways. But knew that deep down inside, he was a loving man who just needed to go on a Sex Diet.

This book was a Fantastic read!

Pierce Kingston owns a small boutique hotel in New Orleans. He was a very controlling man who lived for sex and was opposed to anything related to love or a relationship. As he's forced into therapy we begin to see what he keeps hidden. He and his best friend Annie did not have the best upbringing. It killed me to read as his past was revealed.

Enter Sutton, a straight forward, tell it like it is, sassy hotel owner. She turns his advances down flat, but that's okay. He loves the chase, and she's going to give him the chase of his life. She played an integral part in his healing. Pierce needed someone who he cared enough for, besides his bestie, to make him want to be a better person. His issues were clearly cries for help and help was what he was going to get.

This was a very difficult review to write and I'm sure I'm not doing this book justice. I love the range of emotions Prescott throws at you in this story. Pierce was never fake. He threw out his honesty, especially about himself. He never tried to convince anyone that he was something he wasn't. I felt that Sutton was a very believable character, perhaps one of my favorite females in a while.

I love Prescott's writing. She never disappoints, but this one may have topped any of her others for me. The twists and emotions you feel...you never see them coming. I was a little hesitant in the beginning but when certain things start to come to light, my feelings began to change. Behaviors and situations became easier to understand. I was drawn in and not let go until the very end. Brilliantly written!

Loved this. Definitely triggers, but it had great closure. You felt the love between them from about 70% on, it's hard to explain bc they had great chemistry before that. Some might say the h was a bit doormatish, but I didn't think so at all. She knew what she wanted and went after it and yes, maybe she put up with a lot, but she knew he was worth the work. I even felt like she knew her limit and would have pulled the plug when it was hit. That's good writing. Great epilogue.

If you want it spoiled, just ask.

Pierce Kingston is an interesting character. When first meeting him he’s a bit arrogant but you can just tell there’s a softer side to him. He has commitment and trust issues. Sutton Presley is a strong independent woman but has been hurt in the past. He and his best friend, Annie, share a secret. Told mostly in Pierce’s POV with flashes to the past there’s a bit of mystery that keeps you turning the pages. It’s an insta-love romance that is plot driven.

I'm not sure what initially attracted me to this book. I've never read anything by the author before but something about Pierce's character fascinated me, especially with the story being written from his POV.

Here we have a sexaholic businessman who is in therapy - for his sexual proclivities, not sins of the boardroom - and a woman who is his rival in more ways than one. The share painful memories where relationships are concerned but can they find a way to move forward from their previous heartbreak in order to find a way to trust love and everything it has to offer?

Pierce Kingston is a dominant man, in and out of his business suit. He runs a hugely successful hotel alongside lifelong friend, Annie. Together with Pierce’s half-sister, Tawny, they share a close bond and support each other, mostly against Pierce’s stepmother, Vicki. When Tawny gets a gig at a rival hotel, Pierce comes face to face with Sutton Presley, the hotel's new manager. Drawn to her immediately, Pierce is desperate to get to know her but he has one big problem, the sex diet his counsellor has demanded he follow, for one whole month. Whilst this diet frustrates Pierce, it gives untrusting and hesitant Sutton time to get to know the Pierce the man, rather than Piece the man with the body to die for.

Whilst Sutton and Pierce’s relationship gets off the ground slowly, Pierce starts to face new demons which are connected to his past which he had assumed to have put to rest. With Annie needing answers and Pierce needing to forget, the friendship of these two lifelong friends start to crumble with catastrophic effects.

I enjoyed this story but it didn’t blow me away as I hoped and expected. The storyline was intriguing and the characters were interesting but for some reason it just didn’t gel for me. I felt that the story was trying to be too many things and left me watching from the outside rather than drawing me in. As the story progresses there are twists and shocks which I really didn’t foresee but made the story go from being lighthearted to incredible poignant. This is where the essence of the story was finally revealed and savoured.

*arc provided by the author for a voluntary, honest review*

I've never read anything by Prescott Lane. and honestly, it all started because she took time to find out my name. since something so little mattered to her, she took a chance emailing me, I wanted to do the same. you know me, on the kick of reading authors I've never read before. an author is going to take the time to mention my name, you bet I'm going to consider giving them a go . now I know you can't do that with everyone, there was just something about the author and the book that stuck to me. so... you wanna know what I thought ? here we go.

I'm going to roll this backward. I'm gonna start from the end but not drop any spoilers, so please don't ask for them. the last sentence. the ending. the voyage that Pierce took to get there. to be able to say that specific sentence, was hard. you get this feeling something bad happened throughout the story, but that. . you just KNOW it was hard for him to get to that point. to admit that. but the best part is, Prescott made sure you felt that pressure, that denial, that troubled guilt the whole time. she didn't just make you love Peirce the man whore, she made sure you loved each troubled piece she left bread crumbs for.

Annie is such a huge part of the story. in the beginning I was so sure she was the love interest . so sure something was going to happen. Instead she valiantly plays the rock Pierce needs his whole life. you just don't realize how much she's done for him until you see their history and he reads the letter.

Sutton. now there's the perfect woman to break a man whore, if we've ever met one . what better way to do that than to break him like a horse. I swear I was so sure at one point he'd go through withdrawal symptoms. but in his diet, we get to see so many different layers he didn't know he had. we also get to see this foundation being built between these two characters. one not built on sex, but really on their chemistry and who they were. you get to see Pierce grow, change, evolve. and in a strange way, he becomes stronger with Sutton by his side. accepting things, acknowledging things he never could before. letting things go, he never could before. ride or die . .

like I said earlier, I've never read Prescott before but I'm so glad I did. starting the story of Sutton and Pierce I was sucked it. there was just something about Pierce that captured my attention and he demanded it the whole time. I couldn't stop reading, well unless life reared its head. now here I am in the middle of the night thinking about this story. and for some reason it's got me sitting here thinking, what can I learn from this . I know, it's fiction, but still. I feel like this is a story that has an underlying meaning that will just hit me one day. maybe it's secrets. and how they fester and are never good. who knows. all I know is I'm so glad I got that email, because this is one of the best books I've read so far this year. such a complete story. no loopholes, no plot line holes, no issues with the characters or anything. it just really feels very complete.

this is a 4.5 star read for me! <3
