The sustainability agenda has never been more relevant

At BCSD Australia, we believe that businesses, NGOs, academic institutions, professional bodies and public sector organisations can and should come together to make the case for an inclusive and environmentally sustainable economy, make more successful companies by making them more sustainable, and develop and advocate impactful policy solutions to support that.

Our membership base combines such voices from across the Australian economy and society to develop ambitious climate, nature and equitable policy solutions that simultaneously drive environmental restoration, economic prosperity, and equitable job creation across the country. Our main focus is on Australian policy but we also engage with ASEAN, APAC, EU and UN institutions on targeted topics of relevance to our membership.

What does membership entail?

Being a member of BCSD Australia involves:

  • Setting a Membership Criteria to support your organisation, demonstrating commitment to progressive climate and environmental policy, and leading by example through your actions.

  • Receiving the latest intelligence and insights on environmental, social, governance and climate and biodiversity policy developments and their implications for the business community.

  • Engaging in genuine thought leadership with the BCSD Australia Secretariat and members to develop tangible, high quality policy solutions for today’s most pressing climate and environmental challenges.

  • Providing your unique sectoral expertise and case studies to help inform and formulate the BCSD Australia’s policy recommendations.

  • Representing your organisation at high-profile private member roundtables with key decision makers and opinion formers.

  • Contributing in high-profile public events and webinars.

  • Supporting and joining targeted media initiatives and campaigns run by the BCSD Australia and its peers centred on climate, nature and equity issues and solutions development.

  • Collaborating, networking and sharing knowledge with like-minded organisations who are advocating for ambitious, robust, long-term, 'systems thinking' policy.

What are the benefits of being a BCSD Australia member?

  • Engaging in genuine thought leadership on energy & climate, food & nature, circular economy, cities and mobility and sustainable business growth issues. Through our private member meetings and roundtables, public events and media campaigns, members engage constructively with subject matter experts, opinion formers, parliamentarians, civil servants and ministers. They contribute to the development of high quality, cross-economy and evidence-based policy solutions in BCSD Australia reports and interventions, which we then advocate for in the public arena.

  • Connecting with a cross-economy and cross-society forum of thought leaders. Members join a group with a unique composition, including businesses across a diverse range of economic sectors, public sector actors from local and state governments, leading academic institutions, and high-profile NGOs, and philanthropy. Members have access to a range of viewpoints that allow them to be better informed in terms of setting their own climate and environmental ambitions and how to position themselves in external policy debates.

  • Exclusive insights and profile opportunities. Members receive exclusive invitations to attend all BCSD Australia events, including member-only roundtables, quarterly knowledge hubs and high-profile public events. Members are also the first port of call to contribute to BCSD Australia publications, join private meetings with experts, opinion formers and policy makers, and speak at our high-profile public events.

  • Sharing knowledge and networking with fellow experts. Join our quarterly member meetings, quarterly knowledge hubs and regular private member roundtables where members can discuss key challenges facing their organisations, find solutions to commonly shared challenges and share expertise.

  • Policy, media and public affairs updates. An unlimited number of your colleagues can benefit from our monthly members updates, our weekly briefings and our event invitations.

  • Unique Member Engagement Portal. All members will receive login details to their own Platform which provides them with a datastore of past events, policy briefings and reports handily at your fingertips.

What have we achieved?

With the active support of our members and working collaboratively with other groups, we have an over 30 year history of helping drive the ambitious climate and environmental targets and policy. We are proud to have recently played a part in:

  • Supporting Members to engage at the COP26 International Climate Summit in Glasgow and holding daily online briefings during the summit itself.

  • Successfully advocating for the adoption of Australia’s legally binding net zero target and contributing to the development of the New South Wales government’s net zero strategy.

  • Helping shape Australia's overall policy and program frameworks on:

    • biodiversity through the Australian Business & Biodiversity Initiative

    • the circular economy agenda through our representation on the National Waste Policy Advisory Council, Board appointment to the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation, and the Victorian Government's Circular Economy Business Innovation Centre;

    • clean economy jobs and skills through the Australian Industry Skills Committee (Sustainability Industry Reference Committee) and the Victorian Government Clean Economy Skills Taskforce to influence the Federal and State government’s overall approach on low-carbon skills provision and strategy;

    • green finance through our participation in the Australian Sustainable Finance Initiative.
