ABSTRACT

Insight is the second of six phases. It is about acquiring the knowledge and understanding necessary to carry out a design project. This may be done through studies, surveys, interviews, observations and analyses. Insight can also be gained through design, by exploration, experimentation and iteration in the design process. Insight is essential at an early stage of a project, but also necessary in the other phases. In the early phases, insight helps shed light on the current situation, identify needs, serve as basis for formulating a problem statement and delineate the project. In subsequent phases, new insight is needed to solve the task. There is a variety of different research processes and methods, both simple and more advanced. Some provide data in the form of numbers and statistics, while others provide information through words and images. Phase 2 includes chapters on how to understand the company, situational study, problem statement, method selection, research process, analyses, mapping, testing and measuring.
