Revealed: The diet that could delay the onset of Alzheimer's

It’s well-known that a traditional Mediterranean-style diet can prevent heart attacks and diabetes.

Now a group of Perth researchers say it could also delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, and fruit could be the key.

Edith Cowan University researchers believe just two pieces of fruit a day could be the key to delaying the onset of Alzheimer’s by years.

A three-year study found a high fruit intake slowed down the production of a brain protein known as beta-amyloid.

High levels of that protein can indicate Alzheimer’s.

“You could actually reduce the amount of the cumulation over three years by up to 60 per cent,” researcher Dr Stephanie Rainey-Smith said.

Citrus fruit such as oranges, grapefruits and mandarins are highly effective, as well as berries, but why is still unclear.

And it’s not just about eating fresh fruit.

The classic Mediterranean diet focuses on vegetables, fish and olive oil.

The researchers say it’s never too late to start the diet and improve your health.
