Krewe BohèmeLaunches All New Krewe and Carnival Parade
New Orleans' most artistic and adventuresome krewe to follow presiding
Green Absinthe Fairy through Marigny and French Quarter on Feb. 15
New Orleans, LA - On Feb. 15, 2019 at 7 p.m., the people of New Orleans will be treated to a Carnival
parade the likes of which has never been seen in the history of the city. While the Twelfth Night parades
are the first of Carnival season, the newly formed Krewe Bohème has the distinct honor of beingthe very
first parade of the intense three weeks of festivities leading up to Mardi Gras. Parading through the
Marigny and French Quarter, Krewe Bohème will bring to paradegoers a visual and auditory feast of
mystery, artistry and amusement. Krewe Bohème does not have a typical king or queen and will be
presided over by its intoxicating Green Absinthe Fairy.
The unconventional Krewe Bohème is a collective of the very best of New Orleans' most artistic and
daring people. The fantastical new Krewe Bohème is a 501(c)(7) Social Club and the creation of founders
Julie Barecki, Francesca Brennan and Lizzie Peyroux of the Merry Antoinettes, Bob Hannaford of Krewe
of R.U.M. and Cassandra Rolland and Kimberly Gondrella of Krewe of Godesses. In true bohemian spirit
Krewe Bohème's throws are not the ubiquitous, mass produced beads. Each handmade throw reflects the
creative and eclectic Krewe Bohème membership of New Orleans' bohemians and beauties. Prepare to be
dazzled by the carefully crafted throws, striking costumes, imaginative floats and myriad scenes of
wonderment.
According to Carnival historian Errol Laborde, Krewe Bohème is another example of the leadership role
that women are taking in carnival. In recent years women have led most of the new organizations. Laborde
added that he likes the name Bohème in that it fits in with the artistic character of both Carnival and the
Marginy/French Quarter neighborhood. He also noted that the idea of a green fairy as a monarch is
especially clever. "It is an insider's joke," he noted, "but one worth bringing to light." Laborde continues,
"green fairy" was a nickname given to absinthe, the potent, anise-flavored liqueur used in many of the
city's early cocktails. He said Bohème follows in in the tradition of artists parades originally established in
the 1970s by the Krewe of Clones. The group, which was based at the then new Contemporary Arts Center,
established the small-scale walking parade with miniature floats. The Krewe du Vieux would carry on
Clone's legacy. In the traditions of Carnival, Laborde said, "ideas have a way of re-evolving, each adding
its own new touches."
The Merry Antoinettes, Krewe of R.U.M. and Krewe of Godesses will be joined by the additional inner
krewes of Krewe of King James: The Super Bad Sex Machine Strollers, The Krewe of Hellarious Wingnuts
and the Krewe of S.L.U.T.S. Krewe Bohème is accepting applications at kreweboheme.com from inner
krewes inspired to parade with the krewe during the first parade of carnival. New inner krewes, the time
and location of the Krewe Bohème Mardi Gras Ball and any other announcements will be made as those
details are confirmed.

Meet The Author
Presented by the Institute for the Study of War and Democracy with generous support from the Strake Foundation, Sandra Bolzenius will present her new book Glory in Their Spirit: How Four Black Women Took on the Army during World War II.
October 10 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Location:  Louisiana Memorial Pavilion
945 Magazine St, New Orleans, LA 70130
Sandra Bolzenius presents "Glory in Their Spirit: How Four Black Women Took on the Army during World War II."
5:00 p.m. Reception | 6:00 p.m. Presentation | 7:00 p.m. Book Signing
Before Rosa Parks and the March on Washington, four African American women risked their careers and freedom to defy the US Army over segregation. Women Army Corps (WAC) privates Mary Green, Anna Morrison, Johnnie Murphy, and Alice Young enlisted to serve their country, improve their lives, and claim the privileges of citizenship long denied them. Promised a chance at training and skilled positions, they saw white WACs assigned to those better jobs and found themselves relegated to work as orderlies. In 1945, their strike alongside 50 other WACs captured the nation's attention and ignited passionate debates on racism, women in the military, and patriotism.
Glory in Their Spirit presents the powerful story of their persistence and the public uproar that ensued. Newspapers chose sides. Civil rights activists coalesced to wield a new power. The military, meanwhile, found itself increasingly unable to justify its policies. In the end, Green, Morrison, Murphy, and Young chose court-martial over a return to menial duties. But their courage pushed the segregated military to the breaking point-and helped steer one of American's most powerful institutions onto a new road toward progress and justice.
About the author: Sandra M. Bolzenius is a former instructor at The Ohio State University and served as a transportation specialist in the US Army.
Presented by the Institute for the Study of War and Democracy with generous support from the Strake Foundation, this event is free and open to the public, but please register to attend.

College Prep Event!

FAFSA, CSS Profile, TOPS

Carol Langston Talks about College Financial Aid

METAIRIE, LA - Carol Langston, PhD, director of College Guidance at Metairie Park Country Day School, will discuss financial aid possibilities for college students  at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.

This presentation is free of charge and is open to the public. Registration is not required.

Dr. Langston will discuss the College Scholarship Service Profile, generally referred to as the CSS Profile, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid program, generally referred to as FAFSA, and Louisiana's Taylor Opportunity Program for Students, generally referred to as TOPS.

The CSS Profile is an application distributed by the College Board that allows college students to apply for financial aid. It is designed to give private member institutions of the College Board a closer look into the finances of a student and family. The information provided in the CSS Profile is sent to colleges or universities that the student specifies. This document is required at more than 300 U.S. colleges.

FAFSA is a form that can be prepared annually by current and prospective college students (undergraduate and graduate) to determine eligibility for student financial aid. In addition to demographic and financial information, applicants are asked to list as many as 10 schools to receive the results of the application once it is processed.

TOPS provides Louisiana high school graduates meeting specific eligibility requirements with a scholarship if they choose to attend a Louisiana public or private college or university. It has four award components. Students must apply for TOPS using the FAFSA.

The above forms must be completed and submitted before March in order for students to receive scholarships at most colleges in Louisiana and around the country.

Carol Langston, PhD, has more than 30 years of college counseling experience at Metairie Park Country Day School where she is the Director of College Guidance and she is also the owner of Langston Educational Consulting ( http://collegepronto.com). She has served as a College Board essay consultant, an AP Spanish reader, and has authored a chapter in a college counseling textbook that is used to certify counselors as college counselors.

For more information regarding this presentation, contact Chris Smith, Manager of Adult Programming for the library, at 504-889-8143 or  wcsmith@jplibrary.net.

St. Rose de Lima officially opened as the Rose Collaborative on Thursday at 2541 Bayou Road. The redevelopment is now home to Southern Rep Theatre, Fund 17, KID smart, New Orleans Arts Education Alliance, NewCorp Inc., the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, Brothers Empowered To Teach, Women With A Vision, the Unanimous Jury Coalition and others.
The former church was deconsecrated by the Archdiocese of New Orleans after the 2005 storm. A group of community leaders created the Rose Community Development Corporation five years later. Renovations began in July 2018 and have opened incrementally since this July.

Southern Rep Theatre now occupies the former church building, which has a theater seating 125 people, a stage accommodating 75 and an outdoor performance area. The Parish Hall offices have been turned into a 10,600-square-foot shared workspace at 2533 Columbus St. A community business incubator operated by Fund 17 anchors the space, with nonprofit groups and small businesses as tenants and additional workspaces available for lease.
The school building behind the church has been renovated into a new home for the Waldorf School of New Orleans, a nonprofit school founded in 2000 that integrates academics with the arts, culture and community for nursery schoolers through 8th graders.

DATE:     Tuesday-Sunday, Oct. 10-31, 2018
*Please note THNOC is closed on Mondays.

TIME:      11 a.m.

WHERE:The Historic New Orleans Collection, 533 Royal St., in the French Quarter

HOW:       Admission is $5, free for THNOC members.
Memberships at The Historic New Orleans Collection begin at $35 per year.

WHY:       The Historic New Orleans Collection will resurrect the special Halloween-themed tour of its Louisiana History Galleries Oct. 2-31.  "Danse Macabre: The Nightmare of History"  will be available Tuesday-Sunday at 11 a.m. inside THNOC's flagship building at 533 Royal St.
In medieval allegory, "la danse macabre," or the dance of death, is a ritualized march to the grave-a sober reminder of life's finality cloaked in wicked mirth. In a similar spirit, THNOC's "Danse Macabre: The Nightmare of History" will lead visitors through darker aspects of New Orleans lore.
From the unwholesome subject of executions in French Louisiana to the gritty logistics of cemetery relocation, the tour is a toast to the authentically spooky-a veritable dance to the grave. Mosquitos, serial killers, colonialism and unlawful assembly are just some of the topics likely to produce a bedlam of fright, insights and delights.
Tours will be available at 11 a.m. Tuesday-Sunday, Oct. 2-31. Admission is $5 or free for THNOC members. Please note: this is not a walking tour of New Orleans or the French Quarter, and the tours are not intended for children under the age of 13. Please note THNOC is closed on Mondays.

Celebrate the release of Helen's latest album release, Helkiase, featuring the singles, "Slow Drag Pavageau" and "You Found Me," available now on CD and digitally through bandcamp, spotify, pandora. Vinyl release available October 2018!
Belgian-born Helen Gillet is both a singer-songwriter and surrealist-archeologist focused on the worlds of synthesized sound and acoustic cello. Though Gillet had already begun to experiment with improvisational music prior to her arrival in New Orleans, she's since flourished into one of the most unique, talented and beloved artists in the Crescent City. She's known by her eclectic palette, which includes avant-garde jazz, French chansons, funk, alternative rock and the bohemian flair of the Velvet Underground. Gillet's solo performance is known for it's enigmatic quality as she fabricates each song with a true mastery of live looping technology.

Thriller Night!

Three Local Authors Discuss Their New Books:

Bill Loehfelm, Barry Morgan and Erica Spindler

METAIRIE - Three local authors who are known nationally for their thrillers will discuss their new books at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 11, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.

This event is free of charge and open to the public.

Bill Loehfelm, Let the Devil Out and the Maureen Coughlin series

It's Mardi Gras in New Orleans and rookie cop Maureen Coughlin has no idea what she's in for. Her night working the parades begins calmly-until a half-naked man careens through the crowd and throws himself onto the hood of an oncoming SUV. As she tries to deal with the incident, Maureen hears gunshots. Moments later, with three wounded and a handful of drunken witnesses, Maureen has a full-fledged investigation on her hands. Who was the shooter? Who was he after? Who's the next target? City bigwigs begin pressuring Maureen and her crew for quick answers.

Bill Loehfelm is the author of the critically-acclaimed Devil series about New Orleans Police Department rookie Maureen Coughlin, featuring the novels, Let the Devil Out (a Boston Globe Year's Best for 2016), Doing the Devil's Work, The Devil in Her Way, and The Devil She Knows. He is also the author of the stand-alone novels, Fresh Kills and Bloodroot, set in his hometown of Staten Island. His short fiction and non-fiction have appeared in several anthologies. He lives in New Orleans with his wife, AC Lambeth, a writer and yoga instructor, and their dog. He plays drums in a rock-'n-'roll band.

Barry Morgan, Habana Intrigue

Terry Quinn, an aging American Agent, for an unnamed government department, is sent to Cuba to plan and arrange the kidnapping of a Russian officer. He is assigned a young marine to help carry out the mission and to train for future missions. He sails into Cuba under the guise of a retired businessman visiting Cuba as a tourist. He is met by American and Canadian agents already there to coordinate the defection of a Russian diplomat. He is introduced to a beautiful Cuban woman who is well connected and works with the U.S. occasionally. They form a romantic bond and she becomes a key factor in carrying out his mission.

Barry Morgan retired from the United States in the late 1990s and now lives with his new wife on their sailboat in the Caribbean.

Erica Spindler, Fallen Five

Detectives Micki Dare and Zach Harris are called in to investigate when a millionaire developer leaps from atop his luxury hotel on the night of its grand opening. After Micki receives a mysterious package from her long-dead mentor, and Zach suspects something supernatural is working against them, they realize this is no ordinary case. A dark force is once again threatening the Big Easy.

Raised in Rockford, Illinois, Spindler had planned on being an artist, earning a BFA from Delta State University and an MFA from the University of New Orleans in the visual arts. In June of 1982, in bed with a cold, she picked up a romance novel for relief from daytime television. She was immediately hooked, and soon decided to try to write one herself. She leaped from romance to suspense in 1996 with her novel Forbidden Fruit. Her novel Bone Cold won the Daphne du Maurier Award for excellence. She received a Kiss of Death Award for her novels Forbidden Fruit and Dead Run and was a three-time RITA Award finalist. Publishers Weekly awarded the audio version of her novel Shocking Pink a Listen Up Award, naming it one of the best audio mystery books of 1998.

Community Forum   on  Climate  &  Equity
Community forums will take place in New Orleans neighborhoods, where people are most at risk from the impacts of climate change and social inequity.

At the community forums, we will take a close look at how climate change impacts our daily lives in New Orleans. We will also share the work of community-based organizations and local groups who have found ways to improve conditions in our neighborhoods through responsible city-wide action. These improvements include new small business and employment opportunities, more transportation options, reducing waste, and smart cost-efficient energy systems.

Most importantly, we want to listen to you. Your voice matters in how we move forward as a city to achieve equitable climate solutions. Join us at the community forum.

  • Notre Dame professor to discuss Spanish imperialism in early
    Louisiana
WHO:The Historic New Orleans Collection, with the Embassy of Spain in Washington, D.C.
WHAT:The Francisco Bouligny Lecture: "TheSpanish Monarchy in North AmericaintheEighteenth
Century," presented by Notre Dame professor Felipe Fernández-Armesto
    WHEN:Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018 * 6 p.m. * Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
WHERE:THNOC's Williams Research Center, 410 Chartres St., in the French Quarter
HOW: Admission is $10; free for THNOC members. To register, visitmy.hnoc.org or call (504) 598-7146.
WHY: The vestiges of 18th-century Spanish rule are apparent in the street names and architecture of New
Orleans's oldest neighborhoods, and on Thursday, Oct. 11, noted Spanish scholar Felipe Fernández-
Armesto will investigate the larger role of Spanish imperialism in North America.
Fenández-Armesto's presentation questions how, despite internal weaknesses, Spaniards
acquired vast amounts of land and out-performed imperial rivals, indigenous and European alike.
Along the way, he broaches a broader problem: what made pre-industrial empires work, often
against the odds and against reasonable expectations?
The talk is the latest in the annualFranciscoBouligny lectureseries, which examines Louisiana's
Spanish influences, and it will take place at 6 p.m. at THNOC's Williams Research Center, 410
    Chartres St.
Fernández-Armesto is the William P. Reynolds Professor of History at the University of Notre
Dame, and his distinctions include Spain's national prizes for research in geography and food
writing, as well as the World History Association Book Prize in 2007.

NEW ORLEANS  The world-renowned music and entertainment experience AFRICA UMOJA - which has garnered critical acclaim and standing ovations - will present a special celebration during its third USA Tour this Fall. Hailing from South Africa, the Africa Umoja USA Tour 2018 kicks off its new tour starting September 14th in Houston along with an opening night reception. Running September 14th to November 8th, the tour marks a centennial celebration of beloved late South African leader Nelson Mandela's birthday, who would have turned 100 years old on July 18th earlier this year. Tickets are available now. A 5,000 Kids educational arts initiative is also being presented during this third USA Tour.

Sharing the story, songs, dance, arts and cultural heritage of South Africa in a two-hour whirl of dazzling choreography, vibrant costumes, and spirited performances, the Africa Umoja show has been performed before royalty and world leaders, and impacted audiences in over 50 countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, South America, and the United States. The Africa Umoja USA Tour 2018 is presented by the International Arts Foundation of New Orleans. In a moving spectacle honoring ancestral traditions, the country's pride, and a tribute to Mandela led by a massive ensemble of dancers, singers, and young performers from South Africa,

Presented by the International Arts Foundation, the 5,000 Kids initiative is an invitation for schools, corporations, churches, community-based organizations, and humanitarians to help the Foundation introduce and educate young people about the historical influences of South Africa, the legacy of Nelson Mandela, and South Africa's rich arts and culture during this USA Tour. They are soliciting contributions to purchase up to 5,000 tickets per market for elementary, middle, and high school-aged students. The donation process will be managed by Sherill Hadrick atsherill.hadrick@internationalartsfoundation.com. In the spirit of unity, this is an opportunity to connect community with education and the performing arts.

Africa Umoja was created by Todd Twala and Thembi Nyandeni with their dream of helping underprivileged youth in South Africa and keeping their country's traditions alive, with displays including the Venda Snake Dance, the sounds and dancing of Kwaito, and more. Says Ernest Kelly, executive producer of the Africa Umoja USA Tour: "Africa Umoja is a world class theater experience, with tremendous cultural value. The music/songs, dance, drummers and musicians are inspiring and unifying, especially during this time in America, the message and spirit of Africa Umoja feels incredibly important."

Participating sponsors of the AFRICA UMOJA USA Tour 2018 include: South African Airways, International Arts Foundation, Department of Arts and Culture Republic of South Africa, and International Arts Solutions. Arts Market
As always, we will host a huge arts market, with 22 of our best local and regional makers of hand-crafted artworks and home furnishings. We have carefully curated our group of arts market vendors to showcase the finest quality. For the complete list of Arts Market vendors, see  here.
Food Vendors
Once again, we're going overboard with a huge spread of great barbecue, representing several regional styles - with a fresh emphasis on Louisiana, since New Orleans has seen a surge in barbecue restaurants (ahem) in the time since we started this festival! And yes, it's a barbecue festival - but we will have some options for vegetarians, vegans and those who eat gluten-free. For the complete list of food vendors and their menu items, see  here.
VIP Experience Passes - SOLD OUT
To help recoup some of our costs, we put on sale a very limited number of special VIP Experience backstage passes. These provide access to special viewing and seating areas at both stages, two complimentary bars and a deluxe indoor hospitality suite with a balcony view of Lafayette Square, air conditioning, catering and real bathrooms. The VIP Experience passes cost $250 each (plus a service charge of $13.49), and are good for the entire weekend. We do not sell single-day passes. The passes are not transferrable (from one person to another) and all sales are final (no refunds).
VIP Experience passes for 2018 are SOLD OUT.

The following companies provide their services free of charge as a service to the community:
  • Iron Mountain -- paper shredding and recycling
  • CACRC -- e-waste recycling
  • Republic Services -- single stream recycling
  • The Composting Network -- composting

Since the City established the Recycling Drop-Off Center in August 2010, a total of 1,193 tons have been recycled. Since the current curbside recycling program began in May 2011, a total of 48,822 tons have been recycled. As a result of the City's efforts since 2010 to appropriately dispose of waste tires illegally dumped and collected from residential properties, more than 214,966 waste tires have been transported to the only LDEQ-approved waste tire processor in the City. The tires collected are recycled.

Occupants of residential properties, which are eligible to receive solid waste collection by the City, are also eligible to place up to four (4) tires next to their garbage collection carts on the second collection day of each week (or on Wednesdays in the French Quarter and DDD).  Businesses are not eligible for this service.

Residents are reminded that an ordinance was passed earlier this year (Sections 26-415 through 24-430 of the City Code), which established minimum standards for the storage, sale, repair, removal, installation, hauling and disposal of motor vehicle tires and established a stronger enforcement process with significant fines and penalties.

It is illegal to store more than 20 tires on a property without authorization from LDEQ as a registered Waste Tire Generator or to transport more than 20 tires without a permit from LDEQ, which must be prominently displayed on the vehicle transporting the tires. All tires must be covered to prevent standing water which could become breeding grounds for rodents and mosquitoes that could carry the West Nile or Zika viruses. All Waste Tire Generators must keep LDEQ-approved manifests on site, for a minimum of five years, which document that tires have been legally transported and disposed of by an LDEQ-permitted transporter and tire processor.

The Department of Sanitation is working the NOPD, the Department of Safety and Permits and the Department of Finance to ensure that all tire shops are in full compliance with City and State Codes. The owners of properties that are found not to be in compliance will be cited. As a result of a joint enforcement action involving LDEQ's Criminal Investigation Division and NOPD, arrests have been made for illegally transporting and disposing of tires in Orleans Parish.

For more information, please call 311 or visit nola.gov/sanitation/recycling.

In this six-week survey course, we will be exploring the folklore surrounding fairies and spirits in context of North Western Europe (British Isles, France, Germany, Scandinavia, etc.). We will also examine the large difference between depictions in contemporary pop culture/neo-pagan perspectives and traditional, older folklore and folk-customs. We will also answer the basic questions: What are the Fae? Who are the Fae? Where can they be found? How can you interact with them, if you so choose?

Eric Montgomery is a folklorist, public speaker, organizer of Greater New Orleans Pagan Pride Day, and long time follower and practitioner of Witchcraft and Paganism.

Meeting the Fae takes place weekly, Sundays from 6:00 PM- 7:30 PM
