The aim of this study was to assess the learning progression of 144 novice dental undergraduate students using haptic virtual work-stations. Logged attempts of caries removal tasks were returned by 133 (over 95% of the students) on work sheets and 164 attempts by 63 of the students using the self-reporting online system. The results for the four cavities show that the percentage of caries removed was highest for Cavity 3, reducing slightly for Cavities 4-5 which were harder to perform even though the time taken to complete the task reduced from Cavity 2 – 5. These results show that the students became more skilled at the task and needed less time to complete it more accurately over the two sessions.
