BNU signs Nature Positive Universities Pledge

Buckinghamshire New University (BNU) is proud to announce it has formally signed the Nature Positive Universities Pledge (NPUP).

This fantastic scheme is closely aligned with our sustainability aims and ambitions – and for this reason we are delighted to be recorded among its founding members.

BNU will be added to a map of UK members when the scheme formally launches in October, and over the next year the University intends to undertake a biodiversity assessment of its portfolio.

The University will use the data it acquires to develop SMART targets for improvement, to its own timescale. BNU intends to report its progress in October 2023.

Head of Sustainability at BNU, Steve Edge said: “Having discussed the Nature Positive Universities scheme with the team behind the pledge, we are comfortable that the scheme is aligned with our ambitions under UN Sustainable Development Goals. Put simply, minimising damage to the environment and improving the ecological value of our portfolio is the right thing to do. Though cutting emissions is often seen as the biggest sustainability challenge, it is equally important that we support life on land and below water, both on our sites and through our supply chain.

“Unlike decarbonisation, biodiversity works are often highly visible. The actions of individuals can have a substantial impact on their local environment. Getting out and making improvements to our environment not only improves biodiversity, but the actions themselves can result in considerable mental health benefits. This makes it a great project for staff and students to be involved in.”

Steve added: “BNU attended the inaugural meeting of the UK hub of founding and potential members. We were thrilled to see so many organisations who were passionately driven by staff and students to do better and be more sustainable. There were several institutions that had already made great strides, and many who were in a similar position to us. This gave us confidence that BNU would be part of a like-minded group with whom it could share knowledge and experience and build partnerships.”

BNU is supported in its drive towards sustainability by Bucks Students’ Union who is keen for passionate students to get involved in creating sustainable and enjoyable campuses.
