IBD-potilaiden riski sairastua sekundaariseen osteoporoosiin on jopa 37 %. Riskiä nostavat krooninen tulehdus, kortisonihoito sekä suolikirurgiasta johtuva ravintoaineiden imeytymishäiriö. Tulehdukselliset suolistosairaudet ovat lisääntyneet merkittävästi viime vuosikymmeninä, joten tehty opinnäytetyö tuotoksineen koettiin tarpeelliseksi. The purpose of this practice based Bachelor’s thesis was to produce a guide for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) for Suomen Luustoliitto and write an article about the thesis and the patient guide for their magazine Luustotieto. The aim of the thesis was to increase knowledge about the connection between IBD and osteoporosis among the patients and health care personnel.
The theoretical basis of the thesis consisted of symptoms, diagnosis, care and follow-up of osteoporosis, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Evidence based and peer reviewed information was also gathered about the IBD patients’ risk of getting secondary osteoporosis and how the risk could be reduced.
On the basis of the results was found that IBD patients have as much as 37 % risk of developing osteoporosis. The risk is increased by chronic inflammation, prolonged treatment of corticosteroids medication and malabsorption, which is often caused by diarrhea or bowel surgery. Since inflammatory bowel diseases have increased significantly during the past few decades, this thesis was found very useful for both IBD patients and the commissioner.
