🌟 Exciting insights from Belgian Cancer Registry (BCR) and Stichting tegen Kanker - Fondation contre le Cancer on the impact of the #COVID-19 pandemic on cancer stage at diagnosis! 🌟 In 2020, there were 5000 fewer cancer diagnoses in Belgium than expected based on historical trends. This decline was particularly notable for cervical, prostate, head and neck, colorectal, bladder, and breast cancers. The concern was that delayed access to cancer diagnosis would lead to more cancers being identified at advanced stages. Research results showed a shift in stage distribution for certain cancers like cervical, prostate, bladder, ovarian, and fallopian tube tumors, where fewer early-stage tumors were detected. Additionally, the 1-year observed survival for lung and colorectal cancers diagnosed in 2020 was lower than expected. The findings underscore the importance of continued vigilance in cancer detection and care, especially during challenging times like the pandemic. BCR remains committed to monitoring the long-term impacts of these trends on cancer diagnosis and survival. 👏 Congrats to the authors: Hanna M. The Belgian Cancer Registry collects information about all new cancer diagnoses in Belgium and their follow-up.
About us
The Belgian Cancer Registry collects information about all new cancer diagnoses in Belgium and their follow-up. Based on this information it maps out the nature and extent of cancer in Belgium. It regularly bundles this information in a publication. You can find the most recent information under cancer numbers. The Belgian Cancer Registry also collects all anatomopathological test results as part of the early detection programme for certain cancers (cervical cancer, breast and colon cancer).

Welcome to the official LinkedIn page for the BVT! We centralise the data of residual human tumour samples into a coded database known as the Belgian Virtual Tumourbank Catalogue (BVTc). This user-friendly online application allows cancer researchers to locate samples of interest dispersed across the 11 local biobanks of the BVT network. The project is coordinated by the Stichting Kankerregister. Follow us for regular updates and news about the BVT. #biobanking #cancerresearch #networking 👇 Check the BVT flyer below to see how you can find tumour samples for your research project.

📢 New Study Reveals Disparities in Cervical Screening Follow-up Rates between Denmark and Flanders ✨ Exciting findings from a comparative study shedding light on cervical screening follow-up rates between Denmark and Flanders (Belgium)! The study examined over 70,000 women who received abnormal or inadequate screening results (in 2014-2016). In Denmark, where reminders have automatically been sent since 2012, over 90% of women received follow-up within 18 months. This contrasts with Flanders, where similar rates were only observed for those testing positive for HPV. It is noteworthy to mention that the current reminder system in Flanders was not yet in place for the population studied (women screened in 2016; reminder system introduced in 2018). 👩⚕️ Interestingly, 10–28% of follow-ups were conducted too early, with Danish women exhibiting the highest proportions. Notably, general practitioners (GPs) in both regions demonstrated better follow-up rates compared to gynaecologists. 🏛 The study hints at the potential impact of organizational differences in health systems on follow-up rates. The introduction of reminder systems and the involvement of GPs in screening, particularly in Denmark, could be influential factors. 🌍 With Flanders now having implemented a reminder system, further exploration of its effects is warranted. Understanding these dynamics could enhance screening programs and ultimately improve women's health outcomes. 👏 Congrats to the authors; Susanne Fogh Jørgensen, Eliane Kellen, Annemie Haelens, Koen Van Herck and Sisse Njor Access the full article via the following link: https://lnkd.in/eBRkpCwf #CervicalScreening #HealthcareDisparities #WomenHealth #ResearchInsights #PublicHealth #Denmark #Flanders

#Kankerpreventie #Gezondheidsdoelstellingen #Bevolkingsonderzoek #Symposium

Antwerp Central Station Area: No Elevated Cancer incidence Found! Recent research conducted by the Belgian Cancer Registry and Departement Zorg reveals that cancer incidence rates in the Antwerp's station area are not higher than those in the city center or across Flanders. Minister Hilde Crevits shared these reassuring results following concerns raised by locals due to the presence of a metal smelter nearby. Key highlights of our statistic findings: 💡Overall, cancer incidence risk in the station area is lower compared to Flanders. 💡Cancers such as lung, pancreas, and neuroendocrine cancers are not more prevalent in the station area than elsewhere in Flanders. 💡While cervical and liver cancers are slightly more common, preventive measures like regular screenings and vaccination against HPV for cervical cancer and addressing risk factors like hepatitis and alcohol consumption for liver cancer are crucial. Ongoing studies will delve deeper into environmental factors and health risks, with a focus on children and mothers in the area.
