Smart Light Concepts

Welcome

Thank you for visiting the Smart Light Concepts website

Public lighting is responsible for a lot of carbon emissions. These emissions can be reduced quickly if local governments invest in Smart Public Lighting. Our research results and tools help them to make the right choices, technically and financially.

We invite you to answer some questions regarding the impact of our findings on your energy-saving smart public lighting activities.

It takes about 5 minutes to answer these questions. Thank you for your contribution.

Research project SLIC completed

LED lights in every street lamp in the city centre are on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Lamps that dim at night and turn on when people cycle or drive past. In the European research project Smart Light Concepts (SLIC), researchers from Avans University of Applied Sciences and Portsmouth University explore, together with city and provincial authorities in 4 countries (Belgium, France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom), different solutions for reducing carbon emissions from public lighting. Most of the electricity for European public lighting is being generated by fossil sources.

That is why public lighting is responsible for a lot of carbon emissions. These emissions can be reduced quickly if local governments invest in smart public lighting. Our research results and tools help them to make the right choices, technically and financially.

The research into Smart Light Concepts has been completed. At the end of April 2022, we held our final conference in Mechelen in which the research results were presented. At our conference, futurologist Richard van Hooijdonk outlined the future of smart cities and how public lighting is becoming part of an ever-expanding network of digital solutions that will increase comfort and efficiency in cities. Researchers and representatives of the local governments were part of the pilots presented the results. Those can be seen in the video on this page.

A report of the final conference can be found here.
