The Artist in me

I am a mosaic and visual artist living in South Wales. It is my interpretation of the blended industrial-natural-social landscapes of my home, that continues to inspire me. Influencing my choices in thematic and the materials that define my work as a multi-disciplined mosaic artist. I am committed to supporting communities and the environment through the power of art activity - forming greater connections with others, improving well-being and education through delicately formed experiential projects for all abilities.

The Arts can find creative ways to approach the difficulties we are confronted with in life, making them a little easier to understand, manage or change. I use a diversity of materials and art approaches to reach out to specific communities I engage with, while collaborating with other artists to develop projects from design to public art.

Biography

Stephanie has been working alongside communities facilitating high quality art-based workshops since completing her Ceramics Degree in Cardiff in 1994, where she specialised in figurative sculpture.

While working for a Community Mosaic Company in 1995, she found the potential in mosaic art and the connection into sculpture, co-founding  Ozaic , a mosaic company in 1997, she became freelance Mosaic / Community Artist, Stephanie Roberts Art in 1999.

Stephanie brought the roles of Artist and Community Artist together in practice, each feeding into the other. Which enabled her to provide high quality workshops that utilises the skills in producing Public Art through to the communities she worked with during art project activity. Taking the role of Lead Artist, Facilitator, Designer, and Manufacturer to create innovative projects, often collaborating with other artists to create multi-disciplinary projects that form layered experiences in many art mediums, e.g. drama, animation, print and poetry.

She demonstrates this work through collaborative projects in association with Arts Centre, Local Authorities of Gwent producing, Commissions and Public Art works. Criw Celf workshop facilitator Llantarnam Grange, ‘Save Our Waters’ community sculpture The Riverfront Arts Centre. ‘With Passing Ships’ Newport Regeneration, ‘Nature isn't Neat ‘Monmouthshire Council community commission.

Funded through Arts Council of Wales, Heritage Fund and Lottery Fund creating highly structured and community connected projects. ‘Seven Sisters of Newport’

Stephanie’s experience in working with community groups gives her great understanding of the needs and abilities of others and the positive effects ‘making activity’ can bring to individuals, school children and community groups.  Bringing self-pride, improving health and wellbeing, and belonging to many minority groups. Whether, Asylum Seekers, Romano or Afghanistan Community, or the elderly. Stephanie works alongside all forming opportunities to deliver creative activities into people's lives.

In 2003 Stephanie began and continues to manage budgets up to £40,000. These commissions enabled her to develop her arts practice by providing opportunities to widen her visual language, while often collaborate with other artists.

Her artworks focus on communicating a deep narrative to the public. Often selecting projects that celebrates or focuses on ‘women in society’ or ‘environmental’ issues.

Stephanie’s personal art practice brings her expansive the knowledge of materials together to story tell. Her application of the theories of mosaic art, filter into all her materials, also influencing their use in application. Founding a method of making ‘contoured mosaic’ which using lead as the pencil line within her work, giving heightened dimensions and a distinctive appearance to her art.

Stephanie has also founded The Street Fairy Project 2021, (a small mosaic fairy made from reusing waste materials from her practice. )

The fairy symbolises the belief in making change happen through the activity of creative making and conversation. This project aims continue to help individuals with issues connected to feeling safe in society, in particular women and girls.

These little fairies not only echo her commitment to help her community but to make conscious efforts to reuse materials in her artwork, supporting sustainability of materials and protecting our environment.
