ARC Review: A Letter to the Luminous Deep (The Sunken Archive #1) by Sylvie Cathrall

A charming fantasy set in an underwater world with magical academia and a heartwarming penpal romance, perfect for fans of  A Marvellous Light  and  Emily Wilde's Encylopaedia of Faeries.

“An underwater treasure-chest to be slowly unpacked, full of things I nosy and loving families, epistolary romance, gorgeous worldbuilding, and anxious scholars doing their best to meet the world with kindness and curiosity.”  —Freya Marske, author of  A Marvellous Light

A beautiful discovery outside the window of her underwater home prompts the reclusive E. to begin a correspondence with renowned scholar Henerey Clel. The letters they share are filled with passion, at first for their mutual interests, and then, inevitably, for each other.

Together, they uncover a mystery from the unknown depths, destined to transform the underwater world they both equally fear and love. But by no mere coincidence, a seaquake destroys E.'s home, and she and Henerey vanish.

A year later, E.'s sister Sophy, and Henerey's brother Vyerin, are left to solve the mystery, piecing together the letters, sketches and field notes left behind—and learn what their siblings’ disappearance might mean for life as they know it.

Inspired, immersive, and full of heart, this charming epistolary tale is an adventure into the depths of a magical sea and the limits of the imagination from a marvelous debut voice.

Praise for  A Letter to the Luminous Deep

“A shimmering, delicately crafted delight.”  —H.G. Parry, author of  The Magician's Daughter

“A fascinating and charming story told in a uniquely elegant voice.”  —Louisa Morgan, author of  A Secret History of Witches

“Both the setting and the story are exquisite.”  —Megan Bannen, author of  The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy

Review:

Thank you to NetGalley and Orbit for providing me with an egalley of this book to read and give an honest review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

This book is an underwater academia fantasy. Told through letters and interviews between the characters, you slowly learn the fate of E. Cidnosin and Henerey Clel as their siblings correspond and piece together their ultimate fate.

What initially drew me to this book was the cover. It is absolutely gorgeous. And then when I read the blurb I was truly interested to see how the author would tell an underwater story. I love books of academia, especially when fantasy is involved. What I was not prepared for was the format!

I was unsure if the format of this book would make me dislike it. I've never read an epistolary tale before. There's no real dialogue between the characters save for their correspondence and what they deem necessary to tell of dialogue within those pages, and a few interviews we see from one of the researchers. It seemed like it might get quickly boring or annoying. But I ended up truly loving it. The unraveling of the mystery is a slow burn with most of the correspondence being very poetic and long in prose. And the epistolary style gives us multiple PVS throughout the story. I loved how the characters seem even more open than they might be in person to give personal details, voice their fears, and find solutions with words written on paper. I really enjoyed how the author chose to use the letters, interviews, and book excerpts to show us the story of E and Henerey. The letters do a nice job of showing E's anxiety, OCD, and her unease with interacting with people in person. We also get a good view of Henerey's anxiety. Plus we see how charming both Sophy and Vy are and how their vulnerabilities have shaped their friendship.

The world building is quite interesting. Almost the entire book takes place with the characters living or researching underwater. The characters for the most part are all academics in some way: artists and researchers. The author does a nice job of forming the visual of the world through the letters we read. I loved the little things she inserts to show us how the characters have adapted to their surrounding: water proof paper being the most obvious of adaptations for people living and researching underwater! At the same time, I don't feel like the author truly shows us how this world came to be. She mentions a sky world quite a few times and how it fell, but I never truly got a sense of why or how this world came to be.

Overall, the characters development was quite nice. I loved watching E and Henerey's letters and how they slowly become connected and find some romance. I also loved how Sophy, E's sister, and Vyerin, Henerey's brother, form a friendship through their letters and their sharing of information with each other. Cathrall also takes great strides to be diverse and inclusive in this book.

If you've not read epistolary writing before, I'd give this one a try! It was different from anything I've ever read before. It's an enchanting tale of anxious people!

This book indeed ends on a bit of a cliffhanger leaving you wanting to know just exactly what the characters have found and how they might go about saving those they love. I'm definitely intrigued to read the follow up and see where it goes.

Sylvie Cathrall writes stories of hope and healing with healthy doses of wonder and whimsy. She holds a graduate degree in odd Victorian art and has handled more than a few nineteenth-century letters (with great care). Sylvie married her former pen pal and lives in the mountains, where she dresses impractically and dreams of the sea.

Most Anticipated Releases March 26 2024

Happy Tuesday March 26, 2024 release day!

These are my picks for most anticipated releases this week.

The Emperor and the Endless Palace by Justinian Huang

“What if I told you that the feeling we call love is actually the feeling of metaphysical recognition, when your soul remembers someone from a previous life?”

In the year 4 BCE, an ambitious courtier is called upon to seduce the young emperor—but quickly discovers they are both ruled by blood, sex and intrigue.

In 1740, a lonely innkeeper agrees to help a mysterious visitor procure a rare medicine, only to unleash an otherworldly terror instead.

And in present-day Los Angeles, a college student meets a beautiful stranger and cannot shake the feeling they’ve met before.

Across these seemingly unrelated timelines woven together only by the twists and turns of fate, two men are reborn, lifetime after lifetime. Within the treacherous walls of an ancient palace and the boundless forests of the Asian wilderness to the heart-pounding cement floors of underground rave scenes, our lovers are inexplicably drawn to each other, constantly tested by the worlds around them.

As their many lives intertwine, they begin to realize the power of their undying love—a power that transcends time itself…but one that might consume them both.

An unpredictable roller coaster of a debut novel, The Emperor and the Endless Palace is a genre-bending romantasy that challenges everything we think we know about true love.

I love a good romantasy and this one seems to span the ages.

The Perfect guy Doesn't Exist by Sophie Gonzales

A fanfic writer brings her favorite TV character to life in this friends-to-enemies-to-lovers novel full of humor and heart.

Ivy Winslow has the house to herself for a week while her parents are away. She’s planning to use this newfound freedom to binge-watch her favorite fantasy TV show, H-MAD, and hang out with her best friend, Henry. She’ll also have to avoid her former best friend-turned enemy (and neighbor), Mack. But things quickly go awry when Ivy wakes up to find Weston, the gorgeous, very fictional main character of H-MAD in her bedroom, claiming to be her soul mate.

Ivy realizes that her fanfic writing has somehow brought Weston as she’s imagined him to life. But it turns out that the tropes she swoons over in her stories are slightly less romantic in reality, and her not-so-fictional crush is causing some real-world problems. To figure out why Weston is here and what to do with him, Ivy decides to team up with Henry and (against her better judgment) Mack. But with Mack back in her life, Ivy starts to wonder if Weston, her “perfect guy”, is the one who’s truly perfect for her . . . or if that was someone else all along.

A little enemies to lovers is a must! Also, this one is giving me Weird Science vibes!

Unpopular Opinion Part 1 - Books That Didn't Live Up to the HYPE

Do you ever wonder if you're just broken when you don't like a book that has been hyped? I'm feeling this today.

This year I have DNF'd FOUR books so far. Three of them came highly recommend from multiple book groups and friends that are bookish like me. To say I was disappointed is an understatement.

Then, there are those books I liked well enough, but they didn't hit me with the 5 star feels. People shouting from the rooftops these books must be read, they are the most favorite of stories and the best books ever. But they just didn't give me that feeling.

All this said, it makes me feel like there's something just a touch wrong with me. I didn't love that book but everyone else did. That book made people sob but I never shed a tear. That book tore someone apart but my heart was just fine.

Then I think about it and realize not ever book is for everyone and that's OK!

Here's a look at a few of the books I just didn't understand the hype for and my explanation of why they turned out to not be for me.

Archer's Voice by Mia Sheridan

This one was all over every one of my book groups. Multiple posts with hundreds of comments about how great it is. How it broke them. How everyone must read it. I even had a close friend who tends towards similar likes as me as far as genre and books are concerned tell me it was one of her favorites ever. I started on audio and though perhaps it was the narrator so I switched to Kindle, and I still could not for the life of me figure out the hype. I hated both characters and they had almost no development. I didn't understand their connection, which happened immediately (cannot stand insta-love). And I just could not see starting to like it any better as it was totally unrealistic to me. I DNF'd at 30%.

Empire of the Vampire (Empire of the Vampire #1) by Jay Kristoff

They hype for this series, and all of Jay Kristoff's books, is off the charts. I mean, the premise sounded amazing. I loved the synopsis so I picked it up and hoped it was good, because this book is LONG. Then I started reading, and I can 100% say I didn't like it because of the format. The book is an interview of the main character. So he's basically telling his story through someone else and I just could not get into it. I though perhaps it would transition into a different kind of narration, but it did not. I even asked in my book groups if it did and many commented to push through, it's fantastic, keep going. But I just could not bring myself to like it and DNF'd at 13%.

Still Beating by Jennifer Hartmann

Where to even go with this one. I knew the premise going in. I knew it was dark and had lot of triggers (FYI I don't have triggers so I read just about anything). And the hype, oh the hype! So much promise and POOF it just fizzled for me. It was not the story, per se, though I did have issues with the relationship based on both characters' pasts. But the way the story progressed  and the writing were. I felt like it needed much more editing. I will say, I did listen to this on audio, so perhaps it was the narrator? Maybe if I read it in print it may have been different? That's definitely a topic for another time and perhaps I'll go back for that some day. Though there are so many other books I will love out there, I hate to waste my time on those I won't. DNF'd at 28%.

The Cheat Sheet by Sarah Adams

This one had major promise. I love a good sports love story. And I'd heard good tings about this author (plus she came recommended based on the authors I normally read and love). So I dove in head first and prayed it was a good one. I will say it was cute, but I just didn't see the hype. I wanted a story that pulled me in and made me feel something for the characters and I honestly just didn't. I did push myself to finish it and it was cute. But the characters were immature for their ages and SO MUCH CHEESE. I ended up giving it 3/5 stars.

The Off Limits Rule (It Happened in Nashville #1) by Sarah Adams

Here's me thinking perhaps it was just that one book and things would get better. I mean, this author just keeps getting recommended to me based on what I read so let's give her another shot. Nope. I think, perhaps, this author may just not be for me because I ended up DNFing this beauty at 4%!

This all being said, my opinions are my opinions and what I like might be totally different from what others do! What are some books you went into thinking you'd adore because of all the hype but did not live up to your expectations?

Fat Stack Friday!

   FAT STACK FRIDAY BOOK HAUL!

This week was a great haul for me! Check out all my different new books!

From the library, all three audio:

Two Twisted Crowns (One Dark Window #2) by Rachel Gillig
The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston

I've already listened to and finished The Dead Romantics. I liked it. I'm a fan of Poston's writing.
I started Two Twisted Crowns and hope to finish up this weekend. I loved One Dark Window, plus the covers of the books are gorgeous.

For review:

The Book Swap by Tessa Bickers
Cross The Line by Simone Soltani
The Midnight Feast by Lucy Foley
One Perfect Couple by Ruth Ware
Wild About You by Kaitlyn Hill
Summer Nights and Meteorites by Hannah Reynolds

Looks like I hit the review jackpot this week! I love books about books so Bickers' book looked like a good choice for me. And my family has recently gotten into Formula 1 racing so when I saw a romance centered around it, I had to nab it. LUCY FOLEY! I love her so much so I'm super excited to read her new one. Ruth Ware has been hit or miss for me. This is my 4th review book for her so I hope I like this one. Kaitlyn Hill and Hannah Reynolds are new to me authors. These are both YA titles and I love a good YA romance!

In print:

Neon Gods (Dark Olympus #1) by Katee Robert

A few weeks ago, I found the second book in this series at my local Goodwill (for just 99 cents and in great condition). I wanted to get the first in print, as well, and had some money on my Indigo gift card. I cannot wait to read this series!

New to me on my Kindle:

Among The Beast and Briars by Ashley Poston
If the Shoe Fits (Meant to Be #1) by Julie Murphy
Stone Heart (Dark Olympus 0.5) by Katee Roberts
Beneath the Stars (Sugarlake #1) by Emily McIntire
Beneath the Stands (Sugarlake #2) by Emily McIntire

I really like Poston's writing and wanted to see where she would take fantasy given her books are usually a little magical realism. I have one of the Meant to Be books for review so I wanted to try and read the others before it. Since I got a copy of Katee Robert's Neon Gods (Dark Olympus #1) I figured I should read the prequel first. Plus, it was free for my Kindle! I'm currently obsessed with McIntire's Never After series so I wanted to see what her other writing was like. I got two of her Sugarlake books.

What did you add to your library this week?

Most Anticipated Releases 3/19/2024

Happy Tuesday March 19, 2024 release day!

These are my picks for most anticipated releases this week.

Flirty Little Secret by Jessica Lepe
School counselor Lucy Galindo has a secret.

To her coworkers, friends, and even family, she’s shy, sweet, and constantly struggling to hold off disaster (read: manage her anxiety and depression). But online? She’s bold, confident, and always knows what to say—it’s how she’s become the wildly popular @TheMissGuidedCounselor. It’s also why she keeps her identity anonymous. Her followers would never trust the real Lucy with their problems.

History teacher Aldrich Fletcher thought a new job would give him some relief from his drama-filled family. Instead, he’s dodging his ex-girlfriend and pining over his new co-worker—who only ever seems to see him at his worst. Thankfully, he can count on his online confidant for advice . . . until he discovers @TheMissGuidedCounselor is Lucy.

Now Fletcher has a secret too. And while Lucy can’t deny there’s something between them, she’s not sure she can trust him. Can they both find the courage to share the truth and step out from behind their screens?

I love a good romcom and especially one with secrets! This one seems really cute so I cannot wait to pick it up and give it a try. The author is new to me, as well, and I love finding new auhors!

Expiration Dates by Rebecca Serle

Being single is like playing the lottery. There’s always the chance that with one piece of paper you could win it all.

From the New York Times bestselling author of In Five Years and One Italian Summer comes the romance that will define a generation.

I actually got to read an early copy of this book and enjoyed it. I like how Serle incorporates magical realism into her books but still keeps them contemporary.

Under This Red Rock by Mindy McGinnis

Neely’s monsters don’t always follow her rules, so when the little girl under her bed, the man in her closet, and the disembodied voice that shadows her every move become louder, she knows she’s in trouble.

With a history of mental illness in her family, and the suicide of her older brother heavy on her mind, Neely takes a job as a tour guide in the one place her monsters can’t follow—the caverns. There she can find peace. There she can pretend to be normal. There . . . she meets Mila.

Mila is everything Neely isn’t—beautiful, strong, and confident. As the two become closer, Neely’s innocent crush grows into something more. When a midnight staff party exposes Neely to drugs, she follows Mila’s lead . . . only to have her hallucinations escalate.

When Mila is found brutally murdered in the caverns, Neely has to admit that her memories of that night are vague at best. With her monsters now out in the open, and her grip on reality slipping, Neely must figure out who killed Mila . . . and face the possibility that it might have been her.

Award-winning author Mindy McGinnis delivers a powerful psychological thriller, deftly exploring the dark places in the earth and the human mind, where what is real and imaginary isn’t so easily distinguishable.

McGinnis has long been a favorite author of mine ever since I read A Madness so Discreet. I got to meet her long ago at a book festival in Easton PA and have a singed copy of A Madness so Discreet on my shelves. I also love a good psychological thriller and I'm hoping she treats the mental health issues with good hands.

The Last Bloodcarver by Vanessa Le

The tantalizing romance of These Violent Delights meets the mechanical wonders of Cinder in The Last Bloodcarver, the first in a two-book debut -- with a riveting medical magic system and lush Vietnam-inspired fantasy world.

Nhika is a bloodcarver. A cold-hearted, ruthless being who can alter human biology with just a touch. In the industrial city of Theumas, she is seen not as a healer, but a monster that kills for pleasure.

When Nhika is caught using her bloodcarving abilities during a sham medical appointment, she's captured by underground thugs and sold to an aristocratic family to heal the last witness of their father’s murder.

But as Nhika delves deeper into their investigation amidst the glitz of Theumas’ wealthiest district, she begins to notice parallels between this job and her own dark past. And when she meets an alluring yet entitled physician's aide, Ven Kochin, she’s forced to question the true intent behind this murder. In a society that outcasts her, Kochin seems drawn to her...though he takes every chance he gets to push her out of his opulent world.

When Nhika discovers that Kochin is not who he claims to be, and that there is an evil dwelling in Theumas that runs much deeper than the murder of one man, she must decide where her heart, and her allegiance, truly lie. And -- if she's willing to become the dreaded bloodcarver Theumas fears -- to save herself and the ones she's vowed to protect.

I love that I am seeing more and more own voices books. This one is based on Vienamese lore which I know nothing of. But the description sounds amazing and I'm wanting to see what it's all about!

The Floating Hotel by Grace Curtis

This cozy debut science fiction novel tells a story of misfits, rebels, found family—and a mystery that spans the stars

Welcome to the Grand Abeona home of the finest food, the sweetest service, and the very best views the galaxy has to offer. All year round it moves from planet to planet, system to system, pampering guests across the furthest reaches of the milky way. The last word in sub-orbital luxury—and an absolute magnet for intrigue. Intrigues such Why are there love poems in the lobby inbox? How many Imperial spies are currently on board? What is the true purpose of the Problem Solver’s conference? And perhaps most pertinently— who is driving the ship?

Each guest has a secret, every member of staff a universe unto themselves. At the center of these interweaving lives and interlocking mysteries stands Carl, one time stowaway, longtime manager, devoted caretaker to the hotel. It’s the love of his life and the only place he’s ever called home. But as forces beyond Carl’s comprehension converge on the Abeona, he has to face one final when is it time to let go?

This one just looks fun. I love a good sci-fi and this one has misfits, rebels, a found family, and more. I cannot wait to check it out!

Review: The Program (The Program #1) by Suzanne Young

In Sloane’s world, true feelings are forbidden, teen suicide is an epidemic, and the only solution is The Program.

Sloane knows better than to cry in front of anyone. With suicide now an international epidemic, one outburst could land her in The Program, the only proven course of treatment. Sloane’s parents have already lost one child; Sloane knows they’ll do anything to keep her alive. She also knows that everyone who’s been through The Program returns as a blank slate. Because their depression is gone—but so are their memories.

Under constant surveillance at home and at school, Sloane puts on a brave face and keeps her feelings buried as deep as she can. The only person Sloane can be herself with is James. He’s promised to keep them both safe and out of treatment, and Sloane knows their love is strong enough to withstand anything. But despite the promises they made to each other, it’s getting harder to hide the truth. They are both growing weaker. Depression is setting in. And The Program is coming for them.

Review:
It's been a long time since I read a good Dystopian series and been engulfed enough in the world to truly want to continue. Sadly, this one was not that series.
I read this book as a buddy read with my friend and seriously had to push through to finish it. I didn't care about the world or the characters enough.
Let's start with the world building. Society has a rampant uptick in the suicides of young people; teenagers to be exact. So they create a program where the symptoms are recognized and teens are brought to centers to have the memories the government considers tainted (leading to depressive and suicidal thoughts) wiped clean from their minds. While this idea is interesting, I just didn't fully understand the connection of leaving some things while wiping away other things. In our lives, things are always connected and no matter how hard we might want to wipe our minds clean of something, those connections can't ever been truly severed. Yet, they give these kids some kind of pills to do just that. Do I have any idea how the pills work? Not really. There is a brief description of it but it didn't fully let me grasp how it happened. Combine that with the lack of world building and I just didn't find myself caring enough about this dystopian world. I wanted more of a description of how the suicides progressed in the past. How the program was created? Who created it? Why was there an uptick? Instead, I got a flat story that really seemed to go nowhere.
Next we have the characters. Were they likeable? Enough so that I pushed to get through the story but not enough for me to truly care about them. They were quite underdeveloped for me. Sloane was very flat and I didn't find her relatable. I hated her neediness and dependency, as well. When I read dystopia, I always want to root for the main character to expose the terrible government and overtake it, or at least bring it to its knees. Sloane would never in my wildest dreams be able to do this. She's way too timid and does not come across as smart enough to even pull it off. Her relationship with James seemed completely forced, especially given their more solidified connection after her brother's suicide. There was nothing in depth about their connection other than that. I just didn't see it. And then we get introduced to another male character, Realm, that creates a sort of love triangle that I really didn't need. Plus, I just didn't trust Realm at all. Overall the romance in this book was too cheesey for me to like it and route for it, whatever it might have been.
The pacing was very slow for me. I felt like it wasn't moving or going anywhere. I was actually quite bored. It's not until the very end of the book that we even get any real action. And even that wasn't particularly shock worthy.
Finally, the writing. I found it juvenile. Yes, I know this is YA, but I've ready a lot of YA where the writing flowed and was beautiful. This is not that. And I expected more from the author as far as diving into depression and suicide but, sadly, the author chose not to do that and it left me feeling like she didn't do enough research even for a fictional plot line.
I wanted more from this story than it gave. I pushed through because I was reading with someone and we had a timeline we wanted to reach. And now that I see it's six books, I don't think I can move on without being annoyed at the whole thing.
