Dr Dibyadyuti Roy

Profile

With the experience of being a researcher and an educator in multidisciplinary academic environments across three different continents, my teaching and scholarship facilitates public and cultural policymaking by putting data‐driven knowledge into collaboration and friction with interpretive and exploratory humanistic inquiry. I am a founding member of India's first Digital Humanities collective: the Digital Humanities Alliance for Research and Teaching Innovations (DHARTI) and have spearheaded the inaugural DHAI Conference in 2018 (#DHAI2018), the first DHARTI Twitter Conference (#DHARTITwitterConf) as well as the recently concluded #DHARTI2022 Conference on The Digital Divides: Discontents, Debates and Discussions.

I am an affiliate of the Data and Society Research Institute and also lead numerous public outreach initiatives for Indian Digital Humanities.

Before joining the University of Leeds, I was a faculty member at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Indore as well as at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur.

Responsibilities

  • Programme Director, BA Cultural and Media Studies
  • FAHACS, Digital Education Academic Lead
  • Pedagogic Research in the Arts (PRiA), Steering Committee Member

Research interests

I examine and interrogate cultural narratives of/about dominant technologies, their genealogies, mediations, and fallouts. My core interest(s) advance data-driven research and teaching interventions, particularly in Digital Media and Culture(s), which amplify and dialogue with non-normative and minority subjectivities as well as the interconnected structural inequities of race, caste, class and gender, especially from Majority World/Global South contexts. As a representative sample my recent work has engaged with issues of Algorithmic Accountability in the Global South(s), the role of social media health promotion during Covid 19 in India, the performances of anxious postcolonial masculinity in online spaces, as well as the possibilities and challenges of Indian Digital Humanities.

I have previously worked in and continue to be invested in cultural genealogies of nuclear weapons in postcolonial spaces. Some of my representative publications in this area can be found in journals such as "Interventions: International Journal of Postcolonial Studies" and "South Asian Review."
