AI Fringe
Seoul Summit

AI for everyone
5 June 2024, London

The AI Fringe returns to mark the AI Seoul Summit with a half-day live event at the Knowledge Centre at the British Library in London.

We’ll be bringing together a diverse range of voices from the UK, the Republic of Korea and France to reflect on the priorities and outcomes from the Seoul Summit: AI safety, innovation and inclusivity. The morning will feature keynote addresses, fireside conversations and panel discussions with prominent participants from the Summit, as well as commentators from civil society, academia, government and industry.

It will also be an opportunity to reflect on the last six months since the AI Safety Summit in Bletchley Park and pass the baton to France which will be hosting the next AI Safety summit in early 2025.

Our goals

  • Bring together the views of industry, civil society and academia on safe and beneficial AI.
  • Provide a platform for all communities – including those historically underrepresented – to engage in the discussion.
  • Enhance understanding of AI and its impacts so organisations can harness its benefits.

The inaugural AI Fringe was established to complement the UK AI Safety Summit in 2023 by broadening the discussions for the benefit of the AI ecosystem.

Panel: The state of AI safety: Where we are and where we need to go

The first AI Safety Summit brought the issue of AI Safety to the top of the international AI conversation. Six months on, it’s time to take stock of where we are now and where we need to go to further AI Safety. The panel will discuss progress since Bletchley, including the International Scientific Report on Advanced AI Safety, how the AI safety conversation evolved at the Seoul summit and what we need to bear in mind ahead of France. The panel discussion will be followed by Q&A.

Panel: The expanded conversation: Harnessing benefits & addressing challenges

The AI Summit conversation is evolving in acknowledgment that in order to responsibly harness AI’s huge potential benefits we need to address a broad set of potential negative consequences – from bias, to climate impact and misinformation. This panel will reflect and build on the discussion at the Seoul Summit, and consider how stakeholders across the AI ecosystem – from governments, industry, civil society and academia – can together tackle the challenges. The panel discussion will be followed by Q&A.

Perspectives from the AI Fringe 2023

The AI Fringe brought together diverse views from across civil society, academia and industry – including those historically underrepresented – to engage in the discussion about AI safety and aimed to showcase the UK’s thriving ecosystem, as well as enhance understanding of AI and its impacts.

The views from the 2023 event were captured in the Perspectives paper as a means of contributing to and continuing the discussion about responsible AI development and deployment that happened at the Fringe.

The perspectives represented in this paper are drawn from a range of organisations across civil society, industry and academia, as well as from a group of citizens who comprised the People’s Panel on AI. There was never an expectation that these perspectives would align completely, but there are many areas of agreement and consensus to be found - which we've articulated here in the spirit of informing further conversations.
