3 Things to Look for in a Sunday School Curriculum

by Bryan Osborne on October 10, 2018

There are so many options available for Sunday school curricula. How can you decide which curriculum to pick? Obviously, budget and church denomination considerations are involved, but that still leaves many options on the table. How can you narrow your search down and select the right one?

1. Choose one that brings the family together over God’s Word.

Parents, not churches, hold the primary responsibility for the spiritual upbringing of their children (Deuteronomy 6:6–9), but many parents don’t know where to begin. A Sunday school curriculum that is synchronized across ages, so everyone (including parents!) is diving into the same passages and topics at the same time, brings the family together around God’s Word. It can inspire meaningful conversations and give parents a starting place for discussing and helping their children apply God’s Word.

2. Pick one that is loaded—not just sprinkled—with Scripture.

Scripture reminds us that:

And how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:15–17).

Our children don’t just need good, moral lessons. They need to hear God’s Word to make them wise until salvation, through faith in Jesus Christ, and equipped for good works. Select a Sunday school curriculum that takes God’s Word seriously and teaches more than just Bible “stories.”

3. Select one that wrestles through the hot-button issues we’re dealing with today.

God’s Word is relevant to the issues facing our world today! It is the eternal Word of our Creator—it doesn’t have an expiration date (1 Peter 1:25). But many Christians have little idea how to apply Scripture to the hot-button social issues of our day.

Our children don’t just need good, moral lessons.

We don’t want to leave our children and young people floundering, trying to navigate in an ever-changing world without a compass and a firm foundation for their thinking. A good Sunday School curriculum is up-to-date and doesn’t tiptoe around or avoid the topics we need God’s wisdom to answer.
