Job summary
The Trust is seeking a fixed term Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist to join the Memory Assessment and Treatment Service.
Bolton Mental Health Unit is now part of the new Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. Some of the psychiatric services are situated on the Royal Bolton Hospital site which forms part of the Bolton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, with other services based within community settings.
Main duties of the job
To provide medical leadership to the MATS team.
- Work with other members of the memory assessment team as part of a diagnostic pathway for dementia.
- To provide first line generic assessments to any patient referred to the service. All members of the team will be able to provide these assessments.
- To provide medical support and supervision to the MATS team, completing second line specialist assessment and medical treatment where appropriate.
- To contribute to the development of the service in conjunction with other Team members.
- To supervise junior doctors acting within the MATS team.
- To participate in audit, service development and evaluation.
- To participate and organise teaching within the department.
- In general, the post holder would see two new patients and a follow up per clinical session or five to six follow up patients. These assessments take place at Breightmet Health Centre, Lever Chambers Health Centre in Bolton town centre or patient's own homes. The consultant will not have care coordination responsibilities.

Job responsibilities

- Work closely with the other Old Age consultants and other team members to develop and maintain a high quality, responsive, flexible and integrated service meeting the needs of its client group.
- Maintain high quality medical records for patients being treated by the service, and provide high quality, timely communication with other health and social care practitioners.
- Participate fully in clinical and business meetings within the MATS service.
- Provide support and supervision for junior doctors working within the MATS Service (and be suitably trained to do so).
- Take part in CPD and audit in the ring fenced time in timetable.
- Take part in annual appraisal, job planning and revalidation.
- Remain up to date with mandatory training.
- Have skills in assessment and management of patients using both the Mental Health and Mental Capacity Acts and be able to give advice to others about the use of the acts.
- Report and act on incidents/accidents in accordance with GMMH policy.
- Engage with the wider health and social care economy as required for service developments.
- Supervision and CPD for the management of patients outside the applicants normal age specialism is available via the senior medical staff within the psychiatric department.
- Lead clinical decision making in the multidisciplinary team to ensure the delivery of high quality care
- Develop service clinical priorities in line with national and professional guidance and standards
- Engage with service transformation programmes including attendance at Consultant meetings for their service and directorate.
- Provide clinical supervision for trainees in gaining core psychiatric experience
- Provide clinical supervision for psychiatric trainees in achieving competencies in core general psychiatry
