IAM Observer Guidelines Update

Updates to guidelines for motorcycle observing

(Click the link above to read the Motorcycle Observer Guidelines.)

We have been asked to provide further clarity on the arrangements in all parts of the UK for resuming motorcycle observed runs.

We announced on Friday 29 May that motorcycle observed runs could begin again from Monday 15 June, in line with the announcement that in England non-essential shops will be able to re-open from that date. Observed rides, observer training and quality assurance can be carried out in England from this date because up to six people are now allowed to meet outside as long as social distancing rules are followed. All those taking part, including associates, must have been consulted and agree to take part in advance. Social distancing rules must be followed at all times.

Our published guidelines for Observers, COVID-19 Restart Observer Guidance – Motorcycle June 2020, have been updated to reflect the current situation and are available to read on the Members’ Dashboard, under Group Management>Running a group>Forms & Documents Library.

The COVID-19 Restart Examiner Guidance – Motorcycle June 2020, has also been updated.
If the NHS test and trace system is being used, the guidance here should be followed.
Our understanding, as of the date of this edition of Inform, is that in Northern Ireland unlimited travel within NI is acceptable as long as your reason for travel is justified, such as to exercise. It is also permitted to meet outdoors in groups of up to six provided the social distancing rules are adhered to. A small group of responsible motorcyclists would fit within this if they were out for exercise. Restrictions in the Republic of Ireland still prohibit such gatherings so care should be taken not to stray over the border.

Wales and Scotland have slightly relaxed their rules about meeting in open spaces, but both currently have a five-mile restriction on travel unless exceptions apply. This leaves little scope currently for any change to our full suspension of activities and our motorcycle observed runs remain on hold until there are further updates to the guidance.

We continue to monitor the information from Government and all the devolved administration areas and will update the guidance in line with any changes announced.

Further restrictions may emerge in future at a regional level. While we will do all we can to keep up to date with national, devolved administration areas and regional variation, we ask all Groups to monitor and respond appropriately to any local instruction issued, so IAM RoadSmart can continue to help limit the spread of the Coronavirus across the whole of the UK.
