Dr. William Samoei Ruto, the new president of Kenya 2022, was an alumnus of the DAAD In-Country/ In-Region programme and graduated with an MSc. in Plant Ecology in 2011 from the University of Nairobi. He was part of the delegation that met the DAAD President, Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee when he accompanied the federal president Frank-Walter Steinmeier on his state visit to Kenya in February 2020. The DAAD would like to congratulate Dr. William Samoei Ruto on his election as the 5thpresident of the Republic of Kenya.

In this Portrait of the Month, we would like to introduce you to Dr. Ezekiel Mecha, a DAAD alumnus of the University of Giessen in Germany, who completed his doctorate there and continues to use his networks and collaborations for his home university, the University of Nairobi, even after his funding period. In particular, he has worked on the important topic of endometriosis. In 2021, despite the Corona Virus pandemic, Dr. Mecha organized a successful endometriosis awareness event in Kenya. In 2022, with DAAD funding, a follow-up event was held in Nairobi, to which he invited key experts.Who exactly is Dr. Mecha? Please read on to find out: |

Due to the pandemic, the DAAD could not perform its regional tasks with university and partner visits for almost two years. In 2022, several university visits with scholarship holders’ meetings were on the agenda. Read more about the visits to Moi and Embu universities in April and June 2022 respectively.

PhD in GermanyDAAD Research Grants for Doctoral Candidates for 2023/24!
The Call for Applications for the 2023/2024 Research Grants to Germany is open! These grants are open to young researchers and prospective Ph.D. students in the Sub-Saharan Africa region who wish to pursue either their doctorate full-time in Germany (Research Grants – Doctoral Programmes in Germany; Kenyan-German Postgraduate Programme) or wish to conduct part of their research within their Ph.D. studies in Germany (One-Year Grants: 7-12 months; Bi—Nationally Supervised Doctoral Degrees: up to 24 months).The deadline for the online application is 31 October 2022. |

For summer 2023 Rise Worldwide is asking for internship offers giving German undergraduate students the possibility to intern worldwide. Students participating in this program come from the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, engineering, computer science, medicine, or a closely related field, and receive a DAAD scholarship to help cover living expenses and travel costs. |
