Clutch Player

Rate this book
Clutch player: an athlete who is good under pressure and performs highly impossible plays in a quick and almost impossible amount of time.

Harper

I fell in love when I was 16. Landon was my entire world, and I thought he would be my forever. But I was young and dumb, and with one error in judgement, I destroyed any chance of a future we could've had together, along with our hearts.

Twelve years later and I'm going through the motions of life but not actually living. Which is why I let my friends, Bridget and Simon, set me up on a blind date. Turns out, it's not so blind after all. Because the man sitting in front of me is the same man who's held onto my heart all these years.

Landon

They call me a clutch player because I'm good under pressure and quick on my feet. I was also quick to fall in love. The first time it was with baseball, the second was with Harper. And for a short time I had them both.

Until I lost Harper and all I had left was baseball.

For years, I focused on my career. I had accepted that baseball was my one true love.

Until I saw her again. I never imagined we'd ever get a second chance, but now that she's sitting right across from me, I know there's no way in hell I'm going to let her go again.

5 ☆Mind Blowing Stars!

Stick a fork in me, I'm done! Like complete mush, done! My heart hurt, then it was full... so many emotions for one book! Nikki, you have outdone yourself with Clutch Player. I absolutely fell in love with every character. Even the characters you want to throat punch, because why not. You need someone you just love to hate, right?

What I loved most about this book, is the amazing characters and how real their story flows. You don't get all roses and rainbows here. You get real innocence, their trials and tribulations, betrayal, and gut wrenching to over the moon emotions. And let's not forget, real laugh out loud moments. Clutch Player really brings you back to those high school years with all the drama, stress, and puppy love. Then to the real adult life of a divorced single mom.

One decision. One choice. That's all it takes for your life to change.

This book has exceeded my expectations and blown off the limits. I cant get enough of these characters and wanted to hear more til they were old and gray. Lol. Nikki Ash gave true meaning to getting lemonade from the lemons life hands you when it came to Harper. She rose above difficult situations and continued life in stride. And Landon, oh how hot and swoony he is! Definitely left with a book hangover after this one. So stock up the wine and munchies and get cozy and just enjoy the ride. Top recommended reads of this year for me. Can not gush enough about it.

Clutch Player is a second chance, single parent standalone spinoff, part of the Cocky Hero Club collection. Amazingly written in dual POV with it own HEA. Clutch player is a must read you dont want to miss out on.

My Rating: 5 stars
Genre Reconnected Love | Single Mom Romance | Sports Hero | Second Chances

Review Snapshot : I absolutely loved EVERYTHING about this book. It’s an easy read without ANY unnecessary drama, and it grabs a hold of the heart right from the start. I highly recommend it.

︙︙︙︙︙︙︙︙︙

Nikki Ash is a new to me author and you can bet that I’ll be reading MANY more of her novels after this one. Clutch Player is everything I needed in a romance; it’s a lighthearted and easy read (the drama is so low that readers never have to “worry” about what’s going to happen or come between the characters), the swoon level is at an all time high throughout the ENTIRE book, and the characters are extremely likeable and charming. Seeing some of my favorite secondary characters from another favorite book (BRITISH BEDMATE formally known as Dear Bridget, I Want You by Vi Keeland and Penelope ward) was an added BONUS.

The book starts out when Harper and Landon are still in high school. Being able to see them when they first met and HOW they came together and fell in love really made this book special. Their high school years only lasts for the first 30% of the book, bit it adds a unique touch to the story that I think many readers will appreciate.

Next, we fast forward 12 years later. Both are living totally separate lives until fate steps in and brings them back together. Harper is a divorced single mom of two children and Landon is a retired major league baseball player. They are complete opposites in respect to how their lives changed in their 20s and early 30s, but does that mean they can’t reconnect on their deep and undying love for one another? NOPE. Now some may think this is a spoiler but honestly, it’s not. This is a romance book after all, and we know the couple will eventually come together. However, it’s HOW this happens and the events that lead up to it that makes it special. Readers will SWOON and be absolutely delighted with their love story! I know I was!

If you haven’t read this one yet I highly recommend giving it a try. It’s an easy read but one you won’t forget.

⭐️ 5 "Dreamy Landon" Stars ⭐️
With each novel by Nikki Ash I read, I’m always impressed by her talent at writing the most swoon worthy stories. Clutch Player was another one of these little gems. This second chance / single mom romance was utterly good!

I fell so easily under the charm of Landon Maxwell! This hero… gah!!!! He’s so perfect by its thoughtfulness, dirty mouth and pure adoration of Harper. I found myself totally crushing over his personality! After a tragic break up, when they meet again twelve years later, the feelings between them are still there and still as intense. Landon wants to prove to Harper that she’s always been the one and omg… He achieved to make me weak in the knees with his dreaminess. He just says the right things, is understanding and shows Harper how precious she is to him. I also absolutely loved how he’s so acceptable of her children and is adorable with them. Their break-up resulted from circumstances and fears, but they won’t let them tear them apart again.

Harper loves her children, but since losing Landon she’s never truly been completely alive. She let her doubts break their young love story, but this time she embraces their rekindled romance. Their relationship is truly so beautiful and the hotness of their intimate moments is just delicious!

I absolutely enjoyed the supporting characters (Bridget and Simon from British Bedmate, an original Cocky Hero Novel). I sadly didn’t have the chance to read their own story previously, but this book only made me want to read it more. The friendship between them and Harper, Landon and kids was just so entertaining!

Clutch Player is a story that filled me with happy feelings! I couldn’t stop smiling and swooning all read long from the sheer beauty of this romance. I also shed a few tears and laughed here and there, proving that this book is the total package. Nikki Ash really wrote here a lovely romance that captured my heart!

I find myself thinking once again 5 stars is inadequate when it comes to rating a book. It doesn’t happen often but when it does, it’s serious. I’m not a fluff opinion giver type of girl. I’m the very direct kinda girl who if you ask a question, make sure you want the answer. So when I tell you 5 star is inadequate for a book, read the book. So, hey, read.this.book. LOL

You already know from the blurb these two have history and this is a second chance to get it right. So no surprises there. The thing that blindsided me was the depth of emotion behind the storyline. I was a blubbering fool at every page turn and I loved every minute of it. This story is real and relatable with incredible character growth and development. I have read Nikki before and have always enjoyed her work but this is next level good people. Seriously, read this book.

Disclaimer: I received an Advance Reader Copy at no cost from the publisher/author. All opinions in my review are my own.

Oh my glorious gods, this book really tripped me up. This book absolutely rocked my socks off. Everything about this story was perfect to a T.

This was my first time reading a book from this author and I was greatly impressed with her writing style. It was so welcoming and natural. I was flying through the pages. I really loved the way that the author chose to tell the story. She starts the book off with the main characters in their teens and it worked really well for this particular story. It really solidified the emotions, feelings, and bond that the two main characters had with each other. The plot of the story was perfection. I loved every moment of this story.

These characters really captured a piece of my heart. They were so well developed and had such amazing character development. I loved how relatable the characters were. I really felt a connection with them. I also really loved all of the secondary characters, including the children in the story. I loved the representation of both friendship and family.

This is one romance that you will feel to your core. Harper and Landon have such an intense bond that you can feel it in the air. Their relationship always felt natural. They have explosive chemistry with one another as well. I was rooting for these two from the very start.

Overall, this is a beautiful second chance romance that will melt your heart. This is an emotional story that really packs a punch. It's an impeccably written story that will be sure to capture your heart like it has mine. I can't wait to read more from this author!

The first part of the story starts off when Landon and Harper are at school and we see how their friendship grows into more. I found a particular part of this flashback a little heartbreaking and didn’t like the outcome of certain actions...but part two redeemed itself and I fell in love with this gorgeous couple all over again. Landon is dreamy and I just adored the man he became and the way he treated Harper, both in the present and in their teens.

Another fantastic addition to the CHC world. Inspired by BRITISH BEDMATE and featuring cameos from Simon, Bridget and Calliope.

LOVED this one!!

So many feels in this second chance romance - I loved every single minute of it!

When you think of the most perfect, understanding, sexy AF, charming, and caring book boyfriend, Landon fits that description to a tee. Did I mention he’s perfect?

This story is so well-written, so heartfelt, I couldn’t love it any more if I tried. It grabbed ahold of my heart from the beginning and didn’t let go.

Harper and Landon stole my heart.
They were so lovable and sweet and perfect for each other. Even when times got rough, they still wowed me with their realness and their friendship and honesty and love for one another.

This book rocked all of my emotions.
The good, the bad, the ugly. It was sweet when it needed to be, turning me into a big, swoony mess. And it was steamy at just the right times, making certain parts of me very happy. The characters are lovable, they are relatable, and I felt like I had known them forever. I never wanted to put this story down - so good.

This was my first book by this author and I cannot wait to read more from her.

I listened to the audiobook and the narrators were perfect.

The prefect story of a second chance.
I can't say enough times how amazing Nikki Ash's writing is. This one is no different.
I have reread all her books numerous times, but this one is staying in my heart for quit some time.
This story was on a different level. It had the young love, the struggles of parenting, finding yourself, second chances and heartache all in one shot. Let's not forget all the laugh out loud moments that will have you crying and holding your belly. 🤣
Landon is that one guy that if you get to have in your life, you hold on for dear life because you know there will never be another man out there that will love you like he does.
Harper is that woman who will fight against everything even her own happiness to ensure her kids are taken care of and are safe.
I can't stress enough to just read this story and get lost in this prefect second chance romance.
Job well done Nikki, keep them books coming.

***5 Stars***

This was a great second chance romance. It was fun, sweet, smexy, heartbreaking, swoon worthy and had just the right amount of drama tossed into the mix to keep things interesting without overtaking the romance and that epilogue?? Oh man...so damn good that it has me crossing my toes that we may get to visit this crew again one day in the future.

I loved Harper and Landon. They are both simply good people with good hearts. Harper is all about her kids and being the parent they need, but she isn’t a pushover ~ even when she may want to be due to her own personal feelings. Landon may be a big time ball player, but he’s got a good head on his shoulders and knows a good thing when it slaps him in the face.

Their journey to their HEA was kind of everything. From beginning to end it was so obvious how good they were together, so when the “betrayal” happened, it was heartbreaking, but when they collide again...well that was fate totally telling them to get their acts together. I loved how they dealt with their pasts and got to know each other again. There were bumps and rough patches thanks to a certain horses ass I wanted to gut with a spoon, but I really liked how they dealt with it all and their HEA was totally swoon worthy.

This was a fun second chance romance. All of the characters were well written, even the ones I wanted to do harm to. Each and every one added so much depth to the story that it’s hard to pick a favorite (with a couple exceptions). I loved Bridget and Simon, Ella was too cute and Brian was awesome, but Hunter stole the show for me and I’m crossing my toes that he’ll get his own HEA at some point in the future!

I have not read British Bedmate by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward, that is the book that Clutch Player spins off from on the Cocky Hero Club world. I didn't feel like I missed out on anything and Nikki seamlessly integrated Simon and Bridget into the story as friends of the heroine. She provided enough information to get to know their characters that I didn't feel like I needed to read their story to know them better.

Clutch Player focuses around Harper the heroine and Landon the Hero. For the first portion of the book we see them at the age of 18 and how their friendship grows into first love. Then their world begins to fall apart as Landon is drafted as a baseball player and Harper's life is flipped upside down after she made the biggest mistake of her life. Nikki never fails to bring all the feels and at this point in the book my heart, oh it hurt so much!

Skip forward 12 years and we see Landon and Harper as two very different people with their own lives, until their paths cross on a blind date. Even after all their time apart the connection is still as strong as ever, you get to fall in love with them as young adults, and you fall in love with them all over again 12 years later. Nikki beautifully blends romance, humour and the perfect level of emotion that shows the skill she holds in her craft. There are still a few twists along the road to the HEA and my heart loved every moment of the journey this book took me on. I think this is one of my favourite books from Nikki! For all the second chance romance lovers out there, this is one book you do not want to miss!

Clutch Player is a captivating, engaging and absolutely heartwarming and at times heartbreaking story. Nikki Ash, in her trademark way, brings to to life all kinds of emotions from first love flutters, to regret, heart wrenching guilt and betrayal, and an undying need that melts the heart so beautifully. This is a wonderful second chance romance between Harper and Landon that is full of swoony feels.

Landon and Harper really captured a piece of my heart. They were such well developed characters and I loved how relatable they both were. I really felt an instant connection with them and was immediately immersed in their love story. Harper and Landon have such an intense bond which burned through the pages. I especially loved their initial friendship and their chemistry with one another was explosive. I found myself rooting for these two from the very start.

Clutch Player delivers big time. It has everything from chemistry, drama, romance and best of all a deep and touching friendship. The main characters blended well, and the secondary characters only added depth to the of the book. Ultimately this book was beautifully written, emotional yet fun and sexy single parent/second chance romance and is a wonderful addition to the Cocky Hero Club World. I can’t wait for more from Nikki Ash.

This book was amazing! I don‘t even know where to start. I‘m in love with the characters, the story and just about everything in this book. It really wasn‘t something I expected, Since I never read blurbs.

The beginning of this book is great. You get to know every character and see how past events lead them to the present.

Landon is the perfect guy. I don‘t think he has any flaws. He‘s just an all around good guy and definitely perfect for Harper.

Harper made one mistake and she had to deal with that mistake for a long time. To see her and Landon together after all this time is really heart warming. Seeing him embrace her life and be there for her.. You just have to swoon over that.

I loved the story between those two. It‘s definitely a story I can recommend everyone.

Clutch Player by Nikki Ash is part of The A Cocky Hero Club Series. This is the story of Landon and Harper, but it can be a standalone book from the series. Landon and Harper where young and in love at 16 years of age. But then life happened when Landon was able to get drafted into baseball team which put them with a distance romance that ended with Harper making a mistake that she had to live with now several years later. Now in their current time they end up coming face to face again when they are set up on a blind date. Both never really let go of their feelings so the second chance at love is just what they both need. Enjoyed!

My feelings towards Clutch Player are somewhat conflicting. I was happy to devour this one, but I would have liked a bit more. There was the possibility for this one to wow me, but there were some details I was never as invested in as I could have been.

At first, Clutch Player had me hooked. Then the story went in a direction I had not expected. It was interesting, but I never quite felt the emotional depth I could have felt with the details that were introduced. Although I was interested in how things would develop, I feel some of the elements were a bit rushed and didn’t quite grab me as tightly as I had hoped.

Nevertheless, it was an addictive read that I was happy to power through.

The perfect Second Chance Romance: Clutch Player by Nikki Ash

Publication date: May 17, 2020

I am a new reader to Nikki Ash and oh my goodness I am now going to read everything I can get my hands on. Clutch Player is superb, magical, heartfelt, and emotional with a wonderful ending that will leave you smiling. I am not going to give away more of the story line than you get in the synopsis but in this book you are gifted with Landon and Harper’s full, beautiful first love story as well as their second chance romance and both are so unforgettable and moving. Everything occurs so organically from beginning to end. There are no false notes. The characters are all wonderful. (Except the ones that are meant to be horrible. And those ones do their jobs really well.) You will absolutely fall in love with this book and these characters. Highly, highly recommended.

What you need to know about Clutch Player:
✔ Second chance romance
✔ Complete stand-alone
✔ Single mom
✔ Sexy baseball player Hero
✔ If you loved British Bedmate by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward, you will get to see more of Simon and Bridget.

WRITING STYLE: 5/5
PLOT: 5/5
WORLD-BUILDING: 5/5
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT: 5/5
ROMANCE: 5/5
HEAT: 5/5

Description: “Clutch player: an athlete who is good under pressure and performs highly impossible plays in a quick and almost impossible amount of time.

Harper
I fell in love when I was sixteen. Landon was my entire world and I thought he would be my forever. But I was young and dumb, and with one error in judgement, I destroyed any chance of a future we could’ve had together, along with our hearts.

Twelve years later and I’m going through the motions of life, but not actually living. Which is why I let my friends, Bridget and Simon, set me up on a blind date. Turns out, it’s not so blind after all. Because the man sitting in front of me is the same man who’s held onto my heart all these years.

Landon
They call me a Clutch Player because I’m good under pressure and quick on my feet. I was also quick to fall in love. The first time it was with baseball, the second was with Harper. And for a short time I had them both.

Until I lost Harper and all I had left was baseball.

For years, I focused on my career. I had accepted that baseball was my one true love.

Until I saw her again. I never imagined we’d ever get a second chance, but now that she’s sitting right across from me, I know there’s no way in hell I’m going to let her go again.

Yet another great read from an author involved in A Cocky Hero Novel club. Nikki Ash is relatively new to me and after reading Clutch Player I’m left wondering why I haven’t read more of her works.
If you are looking for a great second chance romance look no further than this book.
Landon and Harper’s story touched me on so many levels, I sighed, I smiled, I cried and I laughed out loud as I joined this couple on their second chance at love.
Landon is a hero we all want as our man because no one loves quite like him, he cares and he loves hard and that’s what makes him so swoon worthy and likeable.
Harper is a woman who wants the best for her kids and she will sacrifice her own happiness to make sure they are happy, all she wants in life is her kids to know they are loved and who smile because they are loved.
This is a book I will read over and over because I loved everything about this read, the characters ate loveable, the kids adorable, the banter flows naturally and there are plenty of classic one liners only a child can deliver. This is second chance romance at its best and I urge you all to one click this gem.

I absolutely adored Clutch Player. This is my first book by Nikki Ash and it won’t be the last. This second chance romance was perfect in every way. The characters, the storyline, the emotions….. perfect!! It has been quite some time since I read a book from this trope and it certainly reminded me why I love them so much!

If I hadn’t had to sleep, then this book would have been read in one sitting. From the very first chapter I was hooked and this story just flowed so perfectly that I didn’t want to put it down. Harper and Landon are meant for each other. They meet, fall in love and then life decided to throw everything at them in order to keep them apart and at times their situations broke my heart.

Harper is an incredible person - There is nothing that I wanted more for her than to be happy. She’s kind, caring, thoughtful, considerate and always puts others before herself.
Landon is nothing short of perfection - He made me swoon so many times throughout the story and if I could, I would swap places with Harper in an instant!

This incredible and realistic story brought out every emotion in me. I had to reach for the tissues at times because along with some heartache this is a book filled with love. I have to say that Clutch Player is beautifully written in dual POV, allowing us to understand and feel what both Harper and Landon were going though and I felt that the secondary characters added to the story perfectly too.

I would recommend this book for you to read without hesitation. Be prepared for some laugh out loud moments that gained me some funny looks and as I’ve already mentioned please have those tissues to hand. I know that you will love this story just as much as I do.

Clutch Player is filled with all the warm fuzzies!!

This is a second chance love story about a wonderful, understanding baseball player and a beautiful mother who puts her children first and hopes for a second chance love. This entire romance I was filled with good feelings and couldn't stop smiling, even when I was blubbering at the end. Nikki Ash never disappoints in writing a wonderful second chance love story.

Harper and Landon date in high school, but when Landon gets drafted by the MLB right out of school, their time gets cut short. Trying to keep a long distance relationship up is difficult and time eventually passes.

It appears fate steps in when a blind date sets them up and they are able to reconnect, but Harper feels her baggage is huge as an ex-wife with two children, but Landon refuses to be pushed away. This is their second chance and he wants Harper, baggage and all.

Clutch Player references characters in British Bedmate by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward, but you don't have to have read it to enjoy this story. This is a complete standalone.

Baseball is my new favorite sport!!!

This was such a fantastic read! This story is the epitome of second chance romance and I loved every minute of it. Not very many people can find the love of their lives at a young age and have it stand the test of times, but these two did.

Harper and Landon are my favorite kind of couple, they start out as BFF’s and then they go through that should we shouldn’t we stage and then one or both takes that magical leap of faith and woohoo they become a couple. But then due to circumstances out of their control they get torn about and bring on that angst that gets you right in the damn feels. Ya know that feeling that makes you wanna throw your kindle right out the window. Be prepared for that my friends!!!

But then in pure Nikki Ash fashion there is this shift in the world’s axis and somehow these two who never stopped loving each other find one another again and bam all is right in the world again!!!!! This was a fantastic read and just left me wanting more!

This was a fantastic second chance romance. A book about how one small decision can change the entire course of your life.

Landon and Harper weren’t just each other’s first loves, they were best friends. But when Landon is drafted to the major league, he moves away and their relationship just can’t handle the long distance. Then choices are made and Harper ends up pregnant and married to someone else.

Twelve years later Landon moves back home and he and Harper are both single. I loved how open and wonderful Landon was with Harper’s kids. They needed a father figure in their lives since their dad works all the time.

I loved seeing these two reconnect and find the happily ever after they both wanted and deserved so much.

Read this book in one sitting, it just sucked me in and didn’t let go. I kinda wished we had more time with Landon and the kids before the epilogue.

A straight up homerun *pun intended*

I neeeeded this book badly. I have had the longest six weeks of my life with no book able to hold my attention long enough to finish it. But then came Harper and Landon and Bye Bye book slump!

We are talking sports romance, second chance, single parent, low angst, cute kids, and all the good stuff. Just what the doctor ordered.

I am in love with these people. The only thing wrong with this book is the lack of sequel, I want to know so much more...
