Bangladesh, India: Workers at Petrapole land port threaten strike from Jan. 31

Workers in Petrapole, India, threaten a strike at the border crossing with Bangladesh from Jan. 31. Shipping disruptions, protests likely.

Informational

Event

Logistics workers at India's Petrapole land port - the busiest border crossing for trade between India and Bangladesh - are threatening an indefinite work stoppage from Jan. 31. Organizers are denouncing alleged harassment by Indian border security forces over entry permits. An earlier work stoppage prompted by the new documentation rules Jan. 18-21 effectively suspended most import-export activities at the Indo-Bangladeshi border. Passenger transit between the countries and port operations at the Benapole land port in Bangladesh are typically unaffected during strikes.

Cross-border cargo transport disruptions are almost certain for the duration of the walkout. Striking workers are likely to demonstrate near the border crossing, possibly affecting passenger transit. Clashes are possible if police attempt to clear demonstrations forcibly.

The Petrapole land port is approximately 74 km (46 miles) northeast of Kolkata city in India.

Advice

Confirm shipments and ground transportation reservations through the Petrapole-Benapole border crossing during the strike. Arrange alternative transport as necessary. Prepare for increased congestion at alternative border crossings. Avoid all protests as a precaution.
