Abstract

Immigration detention practices in the UK are informed by international and national socio-political agendas. This chapter seeks to summarize some of the key socio-political influences. For people who have migrated and been detained, the conditions of detention impact their emotional and psychological wellbeing. At times, psychologists and psychiatrists are called upon by solicitors and other representatives to prepare reports, referred to as Medico-Legal Reports (MLRs), to ascertain the mental health of an individual being detained and make recommendations for their care either in- or outside of detention. This chapter will also detail the process of preparing an MLR, including conducting a mental health assessment, with the aim of aiding the work of clinicians and other professionals in this field.
