S3 Community of Practice

The central knowledge and information hub for Smart Specialisation

The Smart Specialisation Community of Practice (S3 CoP) is the central node on guidance, networking, support and peer-learning on S3, covering its conceptual development and its implementation.

The community builds on the decade-long experience on S3 and brings it forward with a fresh approach. It provides practitioners with a broad set of strategic services, by understanding their needs and co-designing solutions on any relevant S3 aspect.

The S3 CoP aims at reaching out to all quadruple-helix stakeholders interested in Smart Specialisation and creates a space for learning and advancing together. Whether you simply want to stay up to date, or whether you are looking for opportunities to interact with peers and take part to activities, the S3 CoP should offer what you need.

S3 CoP Observatory

Welcome to the S3 CoP Observatory. This brand new platform is designed to serve as a central repository of information for S3s across the EU. It enables users to intuitively compare Smart Specialisation areas of EU regions and Member States, while also providing essential contact points and links to the strategies.

S3: An Introduction

The European Commission has long recognised that research and innovation are key for sustainable and smart economic transformation. In the current programming programming period, such committement has become stronger and clearer, as it is clearly embedded in the “Policy Objective 1” of the European Regional Development Fund.

A smarter Europe by promoting innovative and smart economic transformation.

Smart Specialisation is considered essential to deliver this objective. This is why, increased emphasis is placed on having good governance for regional and national S3s, ensuring that strategies do not remain abstract documents, and that mechanisms and instruments are in place to reach and engage the territory.
