Cost for attending all three workshops: £60 orgs / £25 individuals plus booking fee and attendance is limited to 15.

Workshop Overview
This workshop series aims to support architects, artists, capital project managers and health clients to integrate art into healthcare environments in order to create distinctive and welcoming spaces, rooted in people and place, that make patients and staff feel valued.
Based on Willis Newson’s award-winning work over the past 25 years, including its public art programme for the Y Bwthyn NGS Macmillan Specialist Palliative Care Unit at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, these workshops will explore how sensitive and appropriate use of art can provide distraction, enable reflection, and support wayfinding across a range of healthcare environments.
Spread over three online workshops, the training will take you through a step-by-step process supported by document templates and good practice guidance, based Willis Newson’s experience of delivering award-winning arts in healthcare programmes.
Aimed at enabling you to commission and deliver patient-centred, integrated artworks to enhance healthcare environments, the workshop programme will explore:
- Evidence around the benefits of integrating art in healthcare environments
- How to set a budget and build a Business Case for art
- When to consider art within the development process
- How to identify locations for art in relation to patient need and architectural opportunity
- How to decide what kind of artwork is best for your context
- How to find and commission the right artist
- How to brief, manage and support an artist so that they deliver their best work
- How to engage patients, staff and the wider community in the process
- How to ensure artworks are safe and fit for purpose
The workshops will draw on long experience of working with artists, architects, developers, healthcare clients and patients across a range of healthcare environments. It will include a mixture of taught content, case studies and interactive sharing and discussion.
The Trainer
This programme will be led by Willis Newson Director Jane Willis. A pioneer of the arts and health field, Jane founded Vital Arts, the arts programme for Bart’s Health NHS Trust, in 1994. Since then, as Director of arts, health and well-being consultancy Willis Newson, she has worked with health and arts partners across the UK – Including more than 32 NHS Trusts and Health Boards, Arts Council Wales, National Museum Wales, Arts Council England, The Kings Fund and The Royal Society of Public Health – to produce award-winning arts, health and wellbeing programmes.
She is particularly interested in developing creative solutions to strategic health needs and in supporting skills development within the sector. Working with Professor Norma Daykin at the University of Tampere, Finland, she has contributed to improved evaluation practice within the sector through research programmes, training and resources including www.creativeandcredible.co.uk .

Engage Cymru is the leading membership organisation for gallery education in Wales and has over 70 members, including gallery and museum educators, teachers, local authority officers and artists.
Engage Cymru promotes gallery education through advocacy, regular area group meetings, networking and professional development training events, and through its research projects.
Engage Cymru coordinates WAHWN, the Wales Arts Health & Wellbeing Network, with funding from the Arts Council of Wales. WAHWN launched in 2019 and has since expanded to include almost 300 arts and health professional members. 90 members have participated in Creative & Credible arts and health evaluation training over the past year, aimed at supporting colleagues to deliver robust and credible evidence of their work.
