What you need to know

This is an in-person event for UofG Staff and Students Only.  A valid UofG Staff or Student email address is required to book your ticket.  

This is the first Global Majority and LGBTQ+ Staff Network event supported by the Equality and Diversity Unit, as part of  LGBT History Month and Race Equality Week (5-11th February 2024).

Dr. Amanullah De Sondy will explore the varied journeys of Scottish Muslims, particularly in Glasgow, who made it their home with a critical discussion on contemporary issues of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality and pluralism. He will be joined after his talk in a panel discussion with the University of Glasgow Religion and Belief Equality Champion Professor Iain McInnes,  the University's Chaplain Reverend Dr Carolyn Kelly and the Muslim Chaplain Shayk Hassan Rabbani from Herriot-Watt University. We will also be joined by the University's LGBTQ+ Equality Champion Professor Moira Fischbacher-Smith  to welcome everyone at the event.

Dr. Amanullah De Sondy is Head of the Study of Religions Department at University College Cork in Ireland and Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Islam. Aman has taught Islamic Studies at Ithaca College and University of Miami in the USA and is an affiliate of the University of Glasgow’s Theology and Religious Studies department. He is the author of the Crisis of Islamic Masculinities (Bloomsbury Academic 2014) and Judaism, Christianity and Islam: An Introduction to Monotheism with Michelle A. Gonzalez and William S. Green (Bloomsbury Academic 2020) amongst several other publications. Aman has been broadcasting “thought for the day” with BBC Radio Scotland for nearly twenty years, a regular contributor to the News Panel on RTE 1 ‘Today’ TV show and is passionate about the public understanding of religion through the themes of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality and pluralism.
