Main Themes of the Conference

Recent events such as the global coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) and the recent COP 26 UN Climate Change Conference 2021 have shown how intertwined the fates of all human life on this planet are. They reveal that global pandemics and challenges such as anthropogenic climate change define our lived reality in the first decades of the 21st century. Both global challenges and more mundane facets of worldwide social formations provide ample opportunities for global sociology to explore new and renewed facets of a challenging social reality. They are central to current sociology’s theory and practice. This conference calls for papers dealing with these and other topics related to global sociology and its theory and practice in the 21st century.

The main themes of the ESA Research Network 15 Midterm Conference are connected to global, transnational and cosmopolitan sociology in a highly interconnected world. These include:

  • Policies and policymaking in a globalized world
  • The role of climate change and exogenous shocks such as pandemics on the formation of national and international policies
  • International migration with particular emphasis on Europe
  • Decolonial/postcolonial perspectives
  • Culture, identity, and cosmopolitanism in a changing world
  • Methodological and theoretical developments in global and transnational sociology
  • Glocalization

The ESA Research Network 15 Midterm Conference 2022 invites papers dealing with these and other topics related to global sociology and its theory and practice in the 21st century. Regional or Cyprus-based participants are also invited to submit papers and/or panels on regional topics.

After the conference a volume/journal special issue will be edited based on selected papers presented at the conference.
