Main purpose of job:

As part of a small flexible team, provide driver and messenger services for the British High Commission Maseru, and support the safe and efficient functioning of the mission.

Roles and responsibilities:

Driver/messenger

  • The position will be required to provide professional and efficient transport service to the British High Commission. Primarily driving the High Commissioner to and from appointments in Maseru, Lesotho and South Africa as well as other BHC staff members, and visitors.
  • Ensure the official vehicles are well maintained, clean both inside and out before each trip and report any defects. Duties include cleaning of the vehicles, taking the vehicles for regular services or repairs and performing the K53 pre-trip inspections before each drive (I.e. No leaks or obstructions under the vehicle; seat belts & doors in working order; mirror & windshield secure; wiper blade up-perished; tyre tread & pressure checked & wheels secure; water, oil, brake fluid & fan belt checked; left side or car same as previous; licence disc valid & petrol cap secure; back window & tail lights secure, not cracked and boot securely closed; signal and head lights in working condition.).
  • Provide and confirm journey information with passengers well in advance. Perform a pre-visit (Recce) of the route for all official visits.
  • Ensure that vehicles are prepared, fuelled and secured in advance of VIP visits. Also ensure that all aspects of each VIP visit are well communicated, co-ordinated and delivered.
  • Adhere to all Lesotho and South African traffic laws and regulations at all times.
  • Conduct all round vehicle checks on a daily basis. This includes ensuring that the vehicles are securely stowed, vehicle keys are securely locked away, and visual vehicle inspections such as spare wheel, wheel jacks, etc. are in working order.
  • Transport Administration duties. These duties include maintaining an accurate record of all bookings, journeys, mileage records and fuel consumption.
  • Familiarise, understand and adhere to the OneHMG Transport Policy, underline the agreed service level agreements between partners across government as per the Memorandum of Understanding.
  • Carry out messenger duties as required including, managing the diplomatic bags, delivery of sensitive documents to the bank, MFA and other organisations.  

Corporate services support

  • This position will be required to carry out health and safety checks as per the Property Compliance Assessment (PCA) of the High Commission office as well as the residence and record the results on line.
  • Assist with preparation for, and clean up after, dinners and receptions, including furniture set up and basic cleaning/ tidying.
  • Undertake basic clerical tasks including data inputting, updating contacts database, preparing invitations etc.
  • General administration duties such as updating personal leave records, activity recording, responding to email, reconciling Corporate Credit Cards and Government Procurement Credit Cards within the agreed timelines, expense claim forms, I-expenses, etc.
  • Other assigned tasks as directed.

Language requirements:

Language: English

Level of language required: Fluent reading, writing and speaking

  • Valid Lesotho or South African Drivers Licence
  • A good knowledge Lesotho and South African Road Traffic Laws
  • Relevant driving experience of not less than five years. Must be comfortable and competent driving on Lesotho’s mountains and Gauteng’s freeways.
  • Basic familiarity with using a computer

  • Defensive driving training
