The British Embassy in Rabat is seeking a hard working team player to take up the position of Economics and Campaigns Officer grade B3 (L).

Main purpose of the job:

The role will support the UK’s political, commercial and development aims through providing insightful reporting and analysis on economics, trade, prosperity, climate/green recovery and development in Morocco, in line with the Embassy’s Country Business Plan (CBP).

In doing so, the job holder will be part of, and support, the Embassy’s Prosperity Working Group (PWG), [which brings together our trade, political, climate and private sector development leads to coordinate and maximise synergies across our work]. The job holder will also work with the Embassy’s Communications and Events leads to generate and deliver public-facing initiatives that celebrate and promote the relationship and cooperation between the UK and Morocco [with a focus on prosperity].

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong understanding of economics (macro and political) and have experience providing economic analysis in support of political decision-making. The successful candidate will have strong analytical and communication skills, and will be able to deliver multiple tasks to tight deadlines. The successful candidate will be imaginative, a good networker, possess sound judgement and will identify and implement initiatives to promote the UK-Morocco relationship publicly. The successful candidate will be responsive to tasking and will work collaboratively and consultatively with colleagues.

Main duties and responsibilities:

1. Conduct regular economic research and produce economic reporting and analysis in writing and verbally, that supports policy making and meets the needs of embassy and HMG stakeholders, including highlighting key economic/business/financial/socio-economic developments, policy changes and foreign investments, as well as changes in the regional and international context that could affect Morocco’s economy and their implications for British economic, development, trade and prosperity objectives in Morocco and the region (particularly Africa).

2. This will include producing:

  • a tailored monthly economic report;
  • contributions to the weekly political news summary; 
  • updating on economic developments on a fortnightly basis to the Prosperity-Working Group whilst considering implications and opportunities for the UK as well as areas where we can leverage UK expertise and increase its influence; and 
  • on-demand economic analysis e.g. to support policy decisions.

3. Support economic technical assistance projects) on an ad-hoc basis (and, subject to future funding, economic development projects).

4. Build and maintain a strong network of economic contacts to support the objectives of the Embassy, Department for International Trade and UK private sector including amongst analysts/academics/think tanks and relevant donors.

5. Act as a go-to economic contact with central FCDO departments and UK economic institutions including HM Treasury, Bank of England, FCA, LSE, CBI.

6. Monitor, ensure timely UK input into, and share insights into the economic activities and objectives of multilateral development institutions (including e.g. IMF Article 4 reviews, WB reports).

7. Engage in the generation and delivery of initiatives that publicly promote UK-Morocco relations and cooperation, particularly in relation to prosperity and climate action, including in 2021-22, supporting preparations for COP26 and taking advantage of the 2021 campaign to celebrate the 300th Anniversary of the first Moroccan-British trade treaty.

8. Contribute to the organisation of visits to Morocco by senior UK officials and ministers, including through input into briefings, and programmes, and to the preparation of events such as speaking engagements, dinners and receptions.

  • Ability to respond quickly and effectively to tasking, including paying close attention to detail when needed and being able to re-prioritise at short notice.

Working Hours and Remuneration:

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including a non negotiable gross salary of MAD 23,446 per month, inclusive of all allowances. However, employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount. The package includes a good level of medical insurance, 21 days of annual leave per annum (on pro rata basis) plus 14 public holidays, access to on-site swimming pool, tennis court and gym facilities.

The contract will be for a full-time employment, on a fixed-term basis for one-year with a view for an extension, subject to 6 month’s probation period.

There are no other allowances payable as part of this package. No accommodation and relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.

Conditioned working hours for the position are 38 hours per week Monday to Friday. Given occasionally tight deadlines, and the need to support some events, there may involve some working in evenings and occasional weekends. Time off in lieu will be given for any hours worked outside normal office hours (Mon-Thu 0800-1615, Fri 0800-1300).

This job could be done as a job share, provided both job share partners were able to meet the requirement to work out of hours as needed for events. There would be scope for working from home, to a pattern to be agreed with the line manager. Independent working will be tested as a competence in interviews.

The Embassy has a strong commitment to learning and development and all staff are required to agree a learning and development plan with their line manager.
