Cameras made by a “sinister and dangerous” Chinese firm are being stripped out of Scottish buildings amid concerns about Beijing’s human rights abuses and global aggression.

Scottish ministers are phasing out devices made by Hikvision, a Chinese state-owned company blacklisted in the US, after authorities ruled it poses threats to national security.

British officials and rights campaigners say the company provides the “technological infrastructure” to oppress Muslim Uighurs in China.

Police Scotland, Education Scotland and the Scottish Public Pensions Agency are among the agencies accountable to the Scottish government that installed Hikvision cameras prior to the global backlash.
