A crew member from an American Steamship Co. Great Lakes freighter was killed in a shipboard accident on Monday while anchored in Gary, Indiana, according to reporting.
The Great Lakes shipping website BoatNerd.com reported the crew member, identified as Richard Gray, was second mate onboard the M/V Walter J. McCarthy Jr. Circumstances of his death are not known.
A GoFundMe campaign set up to support his surviving wife and three children has so far raised over $61,000 of its $100,000 goal.
We reached out to American Steamship Company for comment but so far have not heard back.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Coast Guard Ninth District said the Coast Guard was not alerted to the incident.
M/V Walter J. McCarthy Jr. is a U.S.-flagged, 1,000-foot bulk carrier that entered service in 1977.
