CJ Sheeran, Ireland’s largest timber pallet company with a facility in Ballinrobe is organising a charity run in aid of the Mayo Roscommon Hospice in memory of their dear friend and colleague, Eoin Malone, who sadly passed away on April 2nd last after a short illness.

Eoin, who was a native of Westport but lived in The Neale, was Maintenance Manager and Project Engineer at CJ Sheeran Ballinrobe for over 20 years. “He kept our production lines going like a watch. His talented hands can be seen over all ofour factory”, says Fergal Moran, Business Development Director at CJ Sheeran. “Eoin was a keen runner and had completed the Dublin City Marathon last October. He was also an avid fundraiser and was always collecting money for various charities around the locality. The Mayo Roscommon Hospice supported Eoin during his illness and we wanted to give something back in in Eoin’s memory so came up with the concept of Run4Eoin with all monies raised bling to the Mayo Roscommon Hospice.

CEO of Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation Martina Jennings said “We want to extend our gratitude to everyone in CJ Sheeran who have come together to remember their friend and colleague Eoin in this very special way. The funds raised will go directly to providing palliative care services in the community which is so important to the patients and families in need of such care. We are also in the middle of building our Roscommon  Hospice which will be completed next year and the €6m it will cost to construct will all come from fundraised income just like the Mayo Hospice in Castlebar. We would not be able to do what we do without events like the Run4Eoin and the people who give of their time to organise such events. We are so grateful to everyone who support them”.

The 8k looped run is taking place at 6pm on Friday, August 14th, from The Green in Ballinrobe and anyone can participate. Walkers are also welcome.

The Mayo Hospice was completed last summer (2019) and cost €9m to construct. All of that came from fundraised income. The official launch of the Mayo Hospice was performed by Minister Simon Harris in October 2019. Mayo Roscommon Hospice expects the first palliative care patients to be admitted by the end of this year (2020).
Construction has also gotten underway on the Roscommon Hospice this year. It will be completed in 2021 and will cost €6m to build, again all of which will come from fundraised income.

This capital development is going on alongside providing our homecare palliative care services in Mayo and Roscommon. It costs over €2m to fund this service annually, all of which comes from fundraised income. In 2019 Specialist Palliative Care Teams in Mayo and Roscommon looked after 1054 patients, 48% of which were non-cancer.

Of this figure 683 were new patients and 568 people passed away in our care. The inspiring and tireless teams ensured dignity and respect at end of life to the 568 patients who passed away.

In the first four months of this year Mayo Roscommon Hospice cared for over 600 patients alone.

Some of the services that the Foundation provides include:
• Specialist palliative home care nursing 7 days a week 365 days a year
• Social work services
• Hospice care workers/sitter service and extra home help
• Counselling and psychological support to patients and their families
• Financial support and advice for families who experience hardship due to illness
• Ongoing training and education for the palliative care teams
