COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) and global ageing

Fatalities from the virus indicate that older people are more vulnerable. This is well documented elsewhere.  But since health and wellbeing is not just about our physical or biomedical condition, we also want to signpost you to information about other aspects of the social changes we are experiencing everywhere as a result of the spread of the virus.

One of the measures many governments have put into place to deal with COVID 19 is social isolation. For older people in care homes, although they may be perceived to be in a supported environment, this is not necessarily the case – you can still feel loneliness in the middle of a crowd.

Many care homes are not allowing people to visit their loved ones and care home staff can only do so much to compensate.  Our challenge – or opportunity – is to find creative ways to overcome all aspects of loneliness, whether it’s for people in care homes or those self-isolating at home.

Older people are at higher risk for more serious complications from COVID-19. COVID-19 is a new disease and we are learning more about it every day.
