Viola Schreer

Viola Schreer is a social anthropologist with a long-term ethnographic interest in Borneo, human-environment relations, livelihoods, hope, development, and conservation. As part of the ERC project ‘Refiguring Conservation in/for ‘the Anthropocene’: The Global Lives of the Orangutan’, she currently studies an evolving ‘community conservation’ scheme in Central Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. Her research seeks to explore the multiple ways in which anthropogenic environmental change (e.g. forest fires, haze, plantation and infrastructure development), as well as notions of planetary crisis, extinction and conservation itself are experienced, conceptualized and negotiated by the project’s many participants, from Bornean villagers to British scientists. Viola studied social anthropology and political science at Freiburg University and holds a PhD in social anthropology from the School of Anthropology and Conservation at the University of Kent.
