Assistant Director Data, Research and Insight

This role carries senior leadership responsibility for our work on data, research and insight, and their contribution to our operational and strategic objectives.

You will lead teams of data analysts, researchers and other experts, with three senior direct reports and a total of about 50 staff, delivering day-to-day data analysis to support our regulatory activities, a range of research and insight projects covering our regulatory work as well as the wider health and care workforce environment, and a suite of publications to disseminate our work and influence wider policies.

Welcome, and thank you for taking an interest in the role of Assistant Director, Data, Research and Insight at the GMC.

This is a critical senior role for us. Our ability to produce and analyse data and use it effectively is central to our day-to-day work as the UK regulator of medical education and practice. We have developed advanced systems and capabilities in analysis, research and insight drawing on our own and others’ data to support our wider strategic objectives, and to play our part in supporting the medical profession in delivering good, safe care.

Our corporate strategy sets out our ambitions not just to perform our regulatory responsibilities with excellence, but to use our strength and influence to support wider improvement across the UK’s healthcare systems. As the successful appointee to this role, you will be responsible for making sure that our data, research and insight function is central to supporting these ambitions, and is constantly improving, adapting and innovating, making best use of the latest data science and capabilities, including artificial intelligence applications.

The position sits within our Strategy and Policy directorate, but you’ll be the most senior leader on all things data and analysis, representing the data, research and insight function across the organisation, as well as with external partners and on public platforms. The role suits someone looking to step up to a major leadership role in the world of healthcare data.

I have been with the GMC since the end of 2020, having had over 25 years’ experience in central Government, and I can say from experience that it’s a great organisation to be part of. We have a compelling public mission, a deserved reputation for excellence, and a strong position at the heart of the UK’s health care systems. In joining us, you’ll find a strong collaborative culture and a supportive and welcoming group of colleagues. We also offer excellent benefits, including a generous defined contribution pension scheme, and flexible working options.

We strive to provide an inclusive working environment where everyone is valued, and welcome the new perspectives and ideas you may bring. We have placed equality, diversity and inclusion at the heart of our strategy, both as the regulator of an increasingly diverse medical profession as well as an employer. I am very keen for this appointment to contribute to our commitment to improve the diversity of our senior leadership, so I would particularly encourage and welcome applications to this role from women, people with disabilities and people from an ethnic minority background.

As a part of the GMC, you’ll be able to make a real difference. If you feel that this is the right opportunity for you, I look forward to receiving your application.

Shaun Gallagher,

Director of Strategy and Policy
