Josh Seese enters his fourth season as head coach of the Chowan Men’s Lacrosse program.
For the 2023 season, the Hawks battled through a challenging schedule posting a 4-11 overall record and 2-4 in league play. Chowan was on the wrong end of three one-goal contests. The Hawks would make their second straight appearance in the Conference Carolinas Championship. Eric George would grab a First Team All-Conference selection with Jaxon Martin securing his second straight Second Team honor. George and Martin would become the first pair in NCAA DII history to post 50+ goals in back-to-back seasons. For the second straight season, the Hawks would earn national recognition with being named Statistical Champion in Shot Percentage with shooting 39.9%.
In 2022, the Hawks posted a 6-8 overall record and a 2-4 record in league play. Chowan would make their second ever appearance in the Conference Carolinas Championship. With the turnaround, Seese was named Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year along with Jackson Downs registering the program's first-ever First Team All-Conference selections. Jaxon Martin would be named Second Team after setting the program record in goals (59). The program would see their first national recognition being named the Statistical Champion in Shot Percentage with shooting 39.1% on the season.
The 2021 season featured growing pains for the program sporting a 1-11 overall record and a 0-6 mark in league play. The Hawks would earn the Conference Carolinas Messick Award for Sportsmanship. Seese helped guide Jackson Downs to a Conference Carolinas Second Team All-Conference selection.
During the 2020 season, Seese posted the first winning season in a COVID-19 suspended season with a 5-3 overall record. Chowan was on pace to shatter team goals and team assists. The Hawks ranked third in the country in assists (76), first in caused turnovers per game (13.5), and eighth in ground balls (287). Patrick Egan ranked third in the country in assists per game (3.5). Matt Leone ranked seventh in the country in caused turnovers per game (2.38), Austin Lee tallied 3.88 goals per game to rank sixth in the country, while Slater Bender was top-15 in the country in goals allowed per game at 8.25.
Seese comes to Chowan after spending three seasons as the head coach at Potomac State College (NJCAA). During his stint with the Catamounts, Seese saw improvement in two seasons competing against Division I programs and several NJCAA top-25 programs.
Prior to Potomac State, Seese previously coached at Robert Morris University, serving as the Men’s Lacrosse Director of Operations for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. He also coach on the club level for Low and Away Pittsburgh.
Before heading to the college game, Seese coached at University High School in Morgantown, W.Va. from 2011-2013. The Hawks compiled a record of 30-5 during his tenure and won West Virginia Scholastic Lacrosse Association (WVSLA) state championships in 2011 and 2013. For the latter season, Seese was honored with the WVSLA State Coach of the Year award. Prior to his head coaching stint, Seese served as an assistant and defensive coordinator with the University lacrosse team in 2010-11. He also was an assistant coach with soccer from 2008-10 and football in 2012.
A native of Bruceton Mills, W. Va., Seese graduated from West Virginia University in 2012 with his bachelor’s degree in Athletic Coaching Education while minoring in Sports & Exercise Psychology. Seese obtained his masters’ of Science degree in Organizational Leadership, graduating in May 2015 from Robert Morris.
