University of Plymouth Peninsula Medical School is seeking practising doctors who are passionate about medical education and interested in facilitating small group learning within the School. Expansion in student numbers, and now expansion to new sites in Taunton and Torbay, gives rise to these exciting new posts.
Small group learning is a key component of the undergraduate medical course at the Peninsula Medical School where active, collaborative, reflective, student centred learning is fundamental. Small Group Facilitators play a vital role in these groups, facilitating and managing the process of learning, using their expertise to probe and stimulate reasoning and problem solving and to support students to activate their existing knowledge and to integrate and apply new learning.
This role will require providing facilitation of small group learning in Jigsaw and Small Groups (where students share and explore their clinical experiences with a focus on human sciences and professionalism) and Enquiry Based Learning Groups (EBL) (where students use cases to explore the wider aspects of their learning and transfer knowledge to patients and clinical scenarios). We are seeking facilitators for various year groups. New facilitators will usually be expected to facilitate 2 groups in the same year group for either Jigsaw, Small Groups or EBL. You will also be expected to act as academic tutors for up to 5 individual students.
Posts by site September 2021:
Plymouth: EBL Year 2 (Mon 12.30-5pm weekly and Wed 9am-1pm alternate weeks);
Jigsaw Years 1 and 2 and Small Groups Years 3-5 (various days except Tues)
Torbay: Small Groups Years 3 (Mon), 4 (Fri), 5 (Wed) – times TBC
Taunton: Small Groups Year 3 (Mon) – times TBC
Sessions will run on fixed, regular days of the week, scheduled during term-times, with between 9 and 11 meetings per group, per year (18-22 sessions per year). EBL runs for 36 sessions over a year, with 2 groups in each session.
You should be medically qualified, GMC registered and currently practising in the South West locality. You will have an interest in medical education and be prepared to contribute to assessment, curriculum development and quality assurance as appropriate. An interest in education and experience of teaching are essential. Previous experience of small group facilitation is desirable. Induction and annual in-service training will be provided.
Provisional interview dates: Monday 24 May 2021 or Friday 9 June 2021 Either via Zoom or, circumstances permitting, at the Medical School in Plymouth, Torbay or Taunton.
