Event Information

As part of the Engineering & Entrepreneurship Seminar Series, we invite you to join us for a talk by James Brown of Mobiloo.

We are currently in the sixth mass extinction event on Planet Earth.

If we are to believe the scientists (and why wouldn’t we?), only radical social change can divert us from a catastrophic path, which is leading us to widespread crop failures/food shortages (hence famine), increasingly severe weather events and rising sea levels. It is also leading to loss of species/habitat/biodiversity, unprecedented migration, drought, disease pandemics and so on.

Maybe we ought to do something about this! In my talk, I shall explore the reasons I believe that social enterprise has a significant part to play in reinventing how we organise ourselves, and how a different approach to ‘business’ might just contribute to a habitable planet for current and future generations.

Biography

Holder of a number of world firsts and records, James’ consistencies throughout his career have been sport and a desire to make the world better for disabled people.

With a maths degree, James initially went into teaching before deciding to build The Narrows, the UK’s most wheelchair-friendly hotel and restaurant.

His international sporting career spans 35 years. He has competed internationally in multiple disciplines. Despite many victories of his own he’s most proud of being a guide runner for totally blind Darren Cook in the World Youth Games, 1991 where Darren surprised the world by taking gold in all three of his events.

James’ current venture is Mobiloo, the world’s first mobile, accessible toilet and changing facility for disabled people who require a hoist and changing table for their toileting needs. Mobiloo is set to become a world-wide phenomenon.

More recently, James has become heavily involved in the climate movement, Extinction Rebellion because he fears that our current trajectory will lead to an uninhabitable planet and he is fairly keen to do what he can to avoid this.
