About us

Sponsored by bp and produced by The Economist Group, the rEV Index measures the UK’s progress in transitioning to EVs and benchmarks readiness against other leading EV markets, including China and selected European countries. The index identifies the hurdles that local geographies will need to overcome and the opportunities for and pathways to a more rapid transition.

Methodology

The rEV Index scores 40 regions across the UK on their readiness to transition to EVs. UK national-level scores are compared to 8 benchmark countries including China and European markets.

The index framework—including the categories, indicators and scoring weights—has been developed based on research and analysis, and in consultation with industry experts and specialists from academia.

The rEV Index comprises 28 indicators across 8 pillars which are spread across the rEV inputs and rEV outputs sub-indices:

rEV Inputs: The inputs sub-index includes 6 pillars which capture developments in the policy and infrastructural environment that enable readiness for EVs on both the demand and supply sides. It accounts for the following aspects of EV readiness: affordability, purchase incentives, consumer sentiment, charging infrastructure, energy infrastructure and regulations

rEV Outputs: The outputs sub-index includes 2 pillars which capture the impact of policy and infrastructural developments and that provide an indication of EV readiness, including: EV uptake and EV availability
