Introduction

Since 2016, Newcastle University Business School has worked with almost 200 small and micro businesses through its Captured programme and related programmes This includes Your Enterprise, delivered in Partnership with The Millin Charity and Captured for Creatives with Creative Fuse North East We have been supported by the North East Local Enterprise Partnership and many larger firms based in the region

This Christmas gift guide is one of our initiatives to support some of the small businesses we have worked with. We hope you enjoy discovering their fantastic products and services and that you will shop locally and support the small business community.

Leanne has specialised in portraiture since the early 2000s and has developed a fresh approach to capturing the likeness and character of the sitter Leanne has been commissioned to paint many faces, including Cheryl Tweedy and Ashley Cole

She gained a place in the semi finals of the ITV show ‘A Brush With Fame’ where she painted a whole host of celebrities including Tanni Grey Thompson and Paul Nicholas

A children's book author and illustrator, Noriko offers signed copies of her books, which make great personalised gifts for young children

She also creates Chigiri e (Japanese paper collage) inspired by the natural world She offers a range of art prints and cards made from her original Chigiri e

It's From Scratch

Gwen Young is the Cooking Class Host of It's From Scratch. The aim of the classes is to make recipes a reality through virtual cookalongs. They also help shrink the miles between families, friends and colleagues by hosting cookalongs specifically for your group

Recent cookalong themes have included Tapas, Flexitarian Thali, Palestinian and Tuscan. They offer a range of cookbooks and ingredient hampers as well as cookalong gift vouchers.

Rubie’s Natural Soap

Rubie's Natural Soap is created by Ourooba Shetewi. Growing up in Syria, she used traditional bar soap and watched her father make soap from scratch. Many years later, Ourooba was inspired to follow in his footsteps and Rubie’s Natural Soap was born

The soap is made in small batches in the North East. Like her dad, Ourooba focuses on functional ingredients No artificial colours or fragrances are used in her soap; only premium oils, butters and carefully selected skin loving natural ingredients All Rubie soaps are vegan friendly, palm oil free and plastic free; a small step towards contributing to environmentally conscious consumption.

About the Captured Programme

The Captured Programme has evolved over the years and now works in partnership with the Millin Charity and Creative Fuse North East to deliver adapted versions of the Captured programme

Captured, Your Enterprise and Captured for Creatives help business owners to develop the personal and business skills needed to develop their business It requires a time commitment of 12 hours over four workshops, but it is an opportunity for business owners to spend time on the business rather than just in it

Each cohort comprises 6 8 small enterprises and we pair them with a manager/mentor from a larger regional organisation after the first workshop The majority of the programme time will be focused on harnessing the skills and expertise of the 'manager/mentor' to help the business owner develop a better understanding of their opportunities and needs. Owners will explore how to address the challenges they face in achieving these aims and there is also plenty of time for peer to peer learning. New dates will be announced shortly, but if you are interested in taking part in any of the Captured Programmes, please register your interest to be notified when new dates are announced.
