Introduction and purpose of our Careers Programme

In a world with a rapidly changing economic paradigm, it is essential that our students are given the knowledge and skills that will be crucial to becoming socially and economically successful in the dynamic, innovative and competitive economies of the future. The goal of John Willmott School’s Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) Programme is to grow and develop the self-awareness, understanding, decision making and transition planning skills of our students.

John Willmott School places a high value on providing high quality CEIAG for our students. The outcomes of the government’s 2017 policy paper “Careers Strategy: making the most of everyone’s skills and talents” and the Department for Education’s recommended inclusion of the Gatsby Benchmarks has led to a more focussed and comprehensive whole-school programme which serves to nurture the skills and knowledge that our students require to enhance their employability.

At John Willmott School, we believe that a student’s “employability encompasses – their qualifications, experience of the world of work and their skills. Our school’s CEIAG Programme has been carefully planned to meet all eight of the Gatsby Benchmark’s, providing every student with a stable careers programme where he can learn about current labour market information and have meaningful interactions with educational providers and employers that will enable him to develop his own careers pathway.

John Willmott School CEIAG Programme will support students through providing:

  • a PHSRE  scheme of work that progresses from year 7 through to 11, building year on year;
  • form-time activities that compliment the PHRSE scheme of learning
  • links between subjects and professions in lesson-time;
  • external speakers from Colleges, Sixth Forms, Apprenticeship Providers and businesses/industries;
  • careers and skills workshops;
  • careers fairs;
  • the opportunity to meet with an external, impartial careers advisor;
  • access the school’s Careers Leader who has a Careers Leadership qualification.
