Unseasonably heavy rain to impact Northern Territory and Queensland, Australia

Unseasonably heavy rain is expected to impact parts of the Northern Territory and Queensland this week, with some areas possibly looking into several months’ worth of dry-season rainfall.

Northern Australia is in the middle of its dry season, a largely rainless six-month period that runs from May to October, Weatherzone’s Ben Domensino noted.1

However, this week might prove totally opposite as a stream of tropical moisture is expected to produce rain over a broad area of the Northern Territory and Queensland, ‘ possibly delivering several months’ worth of dry-season rainfall in some areas.’

The injection of tropical moisture provided by this large cloudband will also help produce rain over a broad area of eastern Australia from Friday, July 1 into the weekend, possibly persisting into the start of next week as well.

“There are early signs that some of this rain could become heavy enough to cause flooding as a coastal trough deepens early next week,” Domensino said.

“This rain event could cause flooding in parts of the Northern Territory, Queensland and eastern New South Wales, including areas that are normally dry at this time of year.”

On Saturday, July 2, a low pressure trough will deepen near Australia’s east coast, causing rain to increase over parts of eastern New South Wales and Queensland.

Several computer models suggest that southern New South Wales coastal districts could see heavy rain developing from Saturday, potentially causing more than 100 mm (3.93 inches) in 24 hours.2

Another 100 mm are possible over the same region on Sunday, July 3.

Rain is expected to continue into the next week, with accumulated rainfall up to 200 mm (8 inches) likely in some parts of eastern Australia (from Cooktown to Batemans Bay). Isolated rainfall above 300 mm (12 inches) is possible.
