Flash floods in Afghanistan leave over 30 people dead and 100 missing
Severe flash floods hit northern Afghanistan’s Parwan Province on August 13, 2022, leaving more than 30 people dead and around 100 missing.
According to the state-run Bakhtar News Agency (BNA), the affected districts include Ghorband and Shinwari.
Many roads leading to the affected region are still blocked, hampering rescue and relief efforts. However, a helicopter sent by the government on August 14 delivered tents, tarpaulins, blankets and cooking utensils.1
According to the survey conducted by the Afghan Red Crescent in Shinwari district, 9 people have been killed and 133 homes were destroyed in the villages of Tehi Qamar, Tahi Kala, Kaqshal, Malik Khel, Khak Sango, Shiwa, Sir Dara, Ashtar Shahr, and Dahan Estima.2
About 404 ha (1 000 acres) of agricultural land was destroyed as well as 30 water dams and 140 km (87 miles) of roads.
Heavy rains continued affecting eastern and northern parts of the country, causing more destructive flooding.
According to data provided by the UN, a series of severe flash floods in July left more than 75 people dead across the country.
