Planning policies mean more people are using sustainable transport in Hackney than in any other London borough

Hackney Council is asking people to have their say on proposals to transform Green Lanes for walking and cycling.

The proposals, which include introducing protected cycle lanes along the length of the road between Newington Green and Woodberry Grove at Manor House, are aimed at making the entire area safer for cyclists and pedestrians, and creating a greener environment for people to enjoy. 

Roads would be narrowed to help lower traffic speeds and make them easier for people to cross, with the junctions at Stoke Newington Church Street and Lordship Park made safer for pedestrians and cyclists through the use of countdown crossings and cycle signals. 

The Council is also proposing to introduce floating bus stops to help keep buses and cyclists separate, and raised continuous pavements to prioritise pedestrians at side roads. 

Around 35 new trees would also be planted along the road, in line with the Council’s commitment to plant 5,000 new street trees by 2022.

Subject to consultation, the scheme would be delivered in two phases. This consultation relates to the first phase of proposals between Petherton Road and Woodberry Grove. Consultation on a second stage will take place later this year. 

While it is the Council’s ambition to implement the full scheme, reductions in government funding mean that this is subject to a number of current funding bids lodged with partners. Should the Council not be successful in gaining full funding for the scheme in the short term, the scheme could be implemented in stages subject to ongoing bids.
