The Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux (MSSS)  reports on their Facebook page 17 cases of unusual oral and genital ulcers possibly linked to monkey pox have been reported in Greater Montreal.

The Regional Directorate of Public Health is currently investigating the 15 cases that have occurred among residents of the island of Montreal.

Symptoms reported consist mainly of skin lesions at the mouth and genitals. So far, no case under investigation has been seriously ill.

This infection is transmitted through close, prolonged contact. It is transmitted 5 days prior to the onset of symptoms until the skin lesions crack. Symptoms can last 2 to 4 weeks.

Health officials advise:

  • If you have consistent symptoms, consult a health professional for an evaluation (it is best to communicate with the care provider before going there). Examples of symptoms: lesions of the mouth, genital and anus; fever; headache; lethargy (general numbness) sweats; swollen ganglions; joint and muscle pain.
  • People suspected of having the disease must self-isolate at home, wear a mask and cover injuries when in contact with other people.
  • People who have been in close contact (sexual contact or living in the same roof) with a suspected case or people with symptoms should be monitored for 21 days.
