A severe snowstorm is forecast to hit Finland from Thursday to Friday, May 6 to 7, 2021, with up to 30 cm (12 inches) of snow accumulation possible. The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) has warned of poor driving conditions due to sleet, with experts saying the aftermath may be a "snow chaos".

Precipitation is expected to start Thursday, with rains and snow impacting North Karelia and North Savo. As the precipitation becomes snowier in the evening, winds will also be stronger.

According to YLE meteorologist Joonas Koskela, more than 20 cm (8 inches) of snow will accumulate in the eastern and central regions of the country. Up to 30 cm (12 inches) of snow is also possible for some places. Koskela said the situation may result in "snow chaos".

In Lapland, more than 10 cm (4 inches) of snow may accumulate on Friday and Saturday, May 7 and 8.

With severe weather forecasted, the FMI warned of very poor driving conditions in North Karelia and Kainuu from Thursday evening to Friday.

"If you want to go somewhere by car, you should dig out your winter tires," Koskela added.

Driving conditions will also be dangerous due to snow and sleet in Satakunta, South Karelia, Pirkanmaa, Southern Savo, Northern Savo, and Southern Ostrobothnia.

The heaviest snow may fall on Thursday night. Further snowfall is possible Friday morning in Central Lapland, Northern Ostrobothnia, North Savo, and North Karelia.

Scattered snowfall is forecast for Lapland on Saturday, while wetter weather conditions are expected elsewhere in the country.

By Sunday, May 9, the weather should be warmer but showers are still possible in the west.
