Thane: Rescue operations after Maharashtra crane collapse

Twenty people have died and three were injured after a crane collapsed on Monday night at the site of an under-construction bridge in Shahapur, about 70km (43 miles) north of the city of Mumbai in the western Indian state of Maharashtra.

The victims are mostly construction workers and site engineers.

The police, fire brigade and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were deployed in rescue operations at the accident site until Tuesday.

The state government has announced an inquiry. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has tweeted his condolences and announced compensation for the injured and families of the victims.
