Strong and shallow M6.1 earthquake hits Mindanao, Philippines

A strong and shallow earthquake registered by PHIVOLCS as M6.1 hit Mindanao, Philippines at 04:22 UTC (12:22 LT) on February 7, 2021. The agency is reporting a depth of 15 km (9 miles). USGS is reporting M6.0 at a depth of 15.6 km (9.7 miles); EMSC M6.0 at a depth of 40 km (24.8 miles).

The epicenter was located 1 km (0.62 miles) WSW of Bansalan (population 21 391), 3 km (1.9 miles) NE Magsaysay (population 16 592), 17 km (10 miles) WNW of Digos (population 116 122), 19 km (12 miles) NW of Guihing (population 12 466), and 50 km (31 miles) NE of Koronadal (population 125 502), Philippines.

There are 8 230 000 people living within 100 km (62 miles).

155 000 people are estimated to have felt very strong shaking, 646 000 strong, and 3 391 000 moderate.

PHIVOLCS said both aftershocks and damages are expected from the earthquake.

The USGS issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.

Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are a mix of vulnerable and earthquake-resistant construction. The predominant vulnerable building types are unknown/miscellaneous types and heavy wood frame construction.

Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards such as landslides that might have contributed to losses.
