Philippines – Effects of shear line, floods and landslides, update (NDRRMC, PAGASA, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 12 January 2023)

  • The Philippines continues to be affected by heavy rainfall, and strong winds related to a shear line system (formed when cold and warm winds converge), resulting in widespread floods and landslides.
  • According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), since 3 January at least 10 people have died (of which five in Bicol Region, four in Northern Mindanao, and one in Davao Region), two people are reportedly missing, and four individuals sustained injuries. In addition, nearly 439,000 people have been affected, of which 5,500 were displaced to a number of evacuation centres.
  • On 18-28 December, another shear line system affected ten regions of the Philippines, causing 52 fatalities, 18 missing people, and 18 injured individuals. About 744,000 persons were affected and 5,400 houses were damaged.
  • On 12-13 January, moderate to locally heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and moderate to strong winds is forecast over central and southern Philippines. Alerts for extreme floods are in effect for the east-central and east-southern Philippines.
