Mexico - Severe weather (Civil Protection Tijuana, SMN, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 18 January 2023)

  • Heavy rainfall, accompanied by low temperatures has caused floods and landslides across Baja California State (north-western Mexico), affecting particularly Tijuana City with casualties and damage.
  • According to media, two people died, two others were rescued and some houses have been damaged after a landslide that occurred in the Tejamen neighbourhood of Tijuana. Two other individuals died in a flood-related accident. A number of individuals have been displaced to emergency shelters, while power outages due to damage of electrical poles have affected approximately 87,000 users.
  • On 18-19 January, low temperatures, strong winds, and high waves have been forecast for Baja California.
