Carers Manchester Newsletter - Coronavirus Vaccine Special

Tuesday 23 March 2021

It's great news that the Coronavirus vaccine roll out has been happening at lightning speed, but we understand this can be confusing for unpaid carers. We hope the information below will help clear up some of the confusion.

If you have any questions, our Contact Point phone line - 0161 543 8000 is now open 10am - 6pm Monday – Friday (except bank holidays).

Email us at
contactpoint@carersmanchester.org.uk or fill in our web enquiry form. You can also take a look at our FAQs.

Coronavirus vaccine information for unpaid carers

If you are an unpaid carer and are known to your GP, Manchester City Council or receiving Carers Allowance, you will be contacted automatically by the NHS to book your vaccine appointment.

If you are not known to services but you are an eligible carer, you are urged to come forward so you can be vaccinated.

We’ll be temporarily extending our Contact Point opening hours from 10am – 4pm to 10am – 6pm Monday – Friday to support carers during the roll out of Covid vaccinations.

If you are an unpaid carer in Manchester, you are now eligible for the coronavirus vaccine as part of the ongoing vaccination programme.

Under priority group six which is currently rolling out, unpaid carers who are the sole or primary carer for someone elderly or with a disability who are at an increased risk and considered clinically vulnerable are eligible for the vaccine.

If you are eligible as an unpaid carer you will be identified in three main ways:

1. If you are registered as an unpaid carer with your GP (known as having a Carers Flag on primary care records).

2. If you receive, or are entitled to, Carer’s Allowance. The Department for Work and Pensions have shared this information with the vaccination programme.

3. If you are known to Manchester City Council as a carer, and are receiving support following a statutory carers assessment.

If you fall into one of these three categories, you don’t need to do anything and will be contacted automatically by the NHS.

You will be given information about how you can access the vaccination either at a local vaccination centre, pharmacy or at the mass vaccination centre at the Etihad Campus. Where caring responsibilities are shared, both carers can be classed as primary carers and receive a vaccination.

If you are an unpaid carer but unknown to services (GP, Manchester City Council, Department of Work and Pensions etc.) you are also being encouraged to come forward as part of the programme.

We would encourage carers to get in touch with our
Contact Point who can support with questions about the vaccination booking process, eligibility and wider information about being an unpaid carer in Manchester.

Unpaid carers over the age of 18 who are not already known to health and care services can also contact the
National Booking Service online or by ringing 119 to answer a few questions to determine if you are eligible to book your vaccination appointment.

You must be over 18 to book using the national booking service and will need to provide your name and date of birth and NHS number.
Click here to find your NHS number easily if you don’t already know it.
The COVID-19 vaccines are not currently licenced for people under the age of 16, and only certain vaccines are licensed for use on people aged 16 or 17.

If you are aged 16 or 17 and are eligible for a carers allowance, or provide close personal care for someone who is clinically vulnerable to COVID-19, the NHS will contact you when it’s your turn and you will be given a vaccine appropriate for your age by your GP.

Where necessary the GP will support you if there are issues in relation to consent. This is consistent with current practice in relation to other treatments and immunisations.

If you have any further questions about getting your vaccination or registering as a carer, we are temporarily extending our
Contact Point opening hours from 10am to 6pm (except bank holidays) to support you during the roll out of Covid vaccinations.
