May 2019: Happy 10th birthday to King's Health Partners!

Coming up: we’ve been busy this month getting out and about, meeting lots of our Champions, and celebrating our wonderful nurses. We’ve also got a blog to mark Mental Health Awareness week, an intro with our newest Mind & Body recruit, and a reminder about some of the education and training we have on offer.
This month we celebrated Nurses' Day and held workshops for new and existing Champions at the King's Health Partners Annual Conference. At the Nurses' Day event we were delighted to meet a number of current Champions, sign up 36 new Champions, and witness 89-year-old Frank who abseiled St Thomas' Tower. We found out why mind and body matters to you. As frontline staff, it was a privilege to listen to your views.

Champion in Focus: Jamie Williams wrote for us about the importance of being kinder to ourselves and shares some tips on how we can maintain a positive body image and help others who are struggling. Jamie is a Mental Health Nurse at the Eating Disorder Outpatient Service at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

Why mind and body?
There is no escaping the fact that physical and mental health conditions co-exist, and that the outcomes of people with multiple conditions are often much worse compared to those with just one medical condition. Drawing on my past professional roles and my own personal experience, I strongly believe that efforts to join up care are vital to improve the day-to-day lives of thousands of patients, their families, and the professionals involved in their care. That is why I am so excited to join the Mind & Body team and learn more about the fantastic amount of work taking place across south London to deliver excellent integrated mental and physical healthcare, research and education.

What is your vision for the Champions Network?
I am thrilled that the Mind & Body programme is supported by a network of Champions, all of whom agree on the importance of joining up mental and physical health. While the Mind & Body team may be small, I know that our shared vision for improved care will spread far and wide through the passion and enthusiasm of you all. It is therefore my ambition to grow the Champions network even further, and ensure you have all the support you need to continue to advocate for, and deliver, mind and body care. I hope to meet many of you as I settle in to my new role – and I am always just an email or phone call away!

What were some of the standout take aways from the workshop?
At the Annual Conference we held a workshop on ‘Reflections on the Champions Network’, and were delighted that many of you attended to share your experiences. We heard about various activities that the network has helped encourage you to do such as putting some of the activities in our newly released Toolkit into action. It is particularly great to hear that identifying as a Champion helps give so many of you the confidence to stand up and act as an advocate for mind and body care, and that the badges help by acting as a talking point.

The workshop also gave you an opportunity to talk to us about how we can continue to support you in the upcoming years. This adds to the Champions Education and Training Focus Group in April. There are a few avenues the team will be looking into to make sure we are engaging with you in the most valuable ways. In the meantime, if you do have any questions or are considering setting up an event, please do email, we are always happy to help.
If you have used the staff health and wellbeing toolkit, we would love to hear your feedback on:
  • If you have used it with your teams?
  • Has it been a useful tool?
  • Would you like to share your experiences with Champions in our upcoming communications?
  • Would you like us to share more ideas of how the toolkit could be used to support your wellbeing and the wellbeing of your teams?
Please get in touch at mindandbody@slam.nhs.uk in regards to any of the above!
